When Summer of '12 rolls around, I'm going to book myself a week in Sweden to see how far I can trace my Mother's family tree. Any tips/tricks of getting around? And don't worry, I'm studying Swedish soon.
get a bus card that works for trains too As long as you stay away from Rinkeby and Rosengård, you'll be fine(probably)
Rosengård has been the place for several violent clashes between local youth and authorities in the last couple of years. Fire crews have also been threatened and attacked. As a result, the Malmö Fire Department refused to respond to fire calls in Rosengård without police escort. In late April 2010 major riots was started again. Cars, wagons, kiosks, building sheds, recycling stations and bicycle sheds were set ablaze. Firefighters who attempted to put out the fires were subjected to stone throwing and fireworks, and thus had to receive police escort. Twenty riot-equipped police patrols were eventually also set in.
wikipedia on rosengård^ Also, pretty much all swedes speak good english. Learning swedish for a week-long visit probably isnt necessary. also the bus+train card costs like 1000 kronor and works for a month
Oh, okay. I just wanted to learn the language anyways so I don't look like a complete ass when I'm talking to someone. IE, the Foreign guy in the Monty Python sketches.
dragons
Expect to meet alot of Vikings and drink alot of ale, as you join them to pillage other villages, and rape their women. [editline]8th October 2011[/editline]
Oh, okay. Don't bring any clothes, we like naked people.

Wasn't there a thread exactly like this a week or two ago?
Getting around the in the country is probably easiest by train, don't expect high quality service from SJ though. In cities I'd recommend getting around by bus or taking the metro if you're in Stockholm. I guess Riksarkivet is a good way to start your research at.
I assume you're going to Stockholm, seeing as that is the capital. Most people below 50 speak English well. I've actually only been to Stockholm like two times but while you're there you might as well check out "stockholms tekniska museum" not that much more to mention. If you're going north however, make sure to get some anti-mosquito spray. They will be everywhere, and it will be bright at night.
I'm not from Sweden but I just asked my swedish friend and this is what he says:
Go to Stockholm.
:geno: Anyways I had a blast when I went there. I hope you enjoy it too. Just be friendly and try not to look TOO much like a tourist, even though most Swedes I met were quite welcoming. Also, try and put raspberry jam on waffles there. Raspberries in Sweden are like heaven.
Cover your butthole.
Watch out for the polar bears roaming in our streets and you should be fine.
Wasn't there a thread exactly like this a week or two ago?
There was, but it was about Germany. Zillamaster55, make sure to take pictures of your trip and post them if possible.

Expect drunk and crazy mooses.

It's very very very cheap there.
It's very very very cheap there.
No, everything is very very very expensive in Norway. Even more so than Finland.
I go on vacation to sweden almost every few years or so and I got some relatives there so it's a pretty ok place. All nordic countires are almost like copies of eachother in terms of people and locations. Edit: So learn to speak the local language because that's polite even though almost everyone knows english and remember: Everything, i repeat, everything is very probably alot safer and cleaner than in US so there's not much need for paranoia.
I want to go to Sweden [editline]8th October 2011[/editline] Actually I want to live in Sweden

Seeing the pollution in the air? Now you're just making things up.
Don't go to Stockholm, I'd recommend Gothenburg. There's much worth seeing there and the locals are friendlier than in Stockholm.
Oh, okay. I just wanted to learn the language anyways so I don't look like a complete ass when I'm talking to someone. IE, the Foreign guy in the Monty Python sketches.
If you just open your mouth, people will realize that you are American. Then they will flock around you wanting to talk to you since Sweden is obsessed with America. I don't even think people would want to speak Swedish with you. Simply because it would give them an opportunity to talk to a real American and show off how much they've learned about American culture from watching old Simpsons episodes. Which is a common recreational activity in all of Sweden.
I hear every Swedish person has a twin.
No, everything is very very very expensive in Norway. Even more so than Finland.
It's cheap considering everything is expensive and we earn like twice of what you guys do. Sweden is a life saviour.
Language won't be much of a barrier. It's not like you're going to China. Most swedes speak both english & swedish. Some even Norwegian & Danish. (Source: My immigrant swede parents and myself).
Be aware of the horrible accent!
