Microsoft had a splashy showing of next-generation Xbox One hardware and games at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on Monday that included Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg and ...a rape joke? During a demonstration of "Killer Instinct" a male producer of the game was matched up against a woman, who appeared to be bad at playing video games. The Atlantic Wire described that the woman is "playing a video game like a girl" -- suggesting that the scenario was set up to perpetuate a stereotype that women are not serious gamers. "I can't even block correctly, and you're too fast," she says. "Here we go. Just let it happen. It'll be over soon," he says. The audience laughs at the remark that many have interpreted as a rape joke. The banter continues between the two, further adding fuel to the allegations that the joke mimicked a sexual assault scenario. "You have a fight stick," she says. "Wow, you like those," he says. "No, I don't like this," she says. On Twitter, the audience reacted right away. "Wow. This is really gross. Male overpowering a female in a game, so of course, rape joke. Good one, Msoft," @Vahn16 tweeted. "Oh my god. One of the people just made a rape joke onstage and the audience actually liked it. That's sick," @IatosHaunted tweeted. "Even if it was unintentional, Microsoft should've realized they shouldn't make a rape joke in an environment already toxic with misogyny," @stillgray tweeted. "Let's bring a woman on stage and joke about how she's bad at games, and say stuff like 'relax, just let it happen, it'll be over soon'??" @Jonathan_Blow tweeted. "Killer Instinct" is produced by Rare Ltd., which is a subsidiary of Microsoft Studios. Some alleged that the demo was scripted, but those claims were shot down by Microsoft. A spokesperson for the company released this statement to CBSNews.com: "The comments in question during the 'Killer Instinct' demo were not scripted. The demo was meant to include friendly gameplay banter, and there was no ill intent." Microsoft did not comment further on the allegations that the developer made a rape joke on stage during the demo. The games industry has grappled with sexism for years, even as the gender gap closes. According to the Entertainment Software Association, about 47 percent of gamers are women. Just when I thought that Microsoft couldn't fuck up anymore. Admittedly it's not their biggest fuck up but surely they must've had at least one person realise this was a bad idea.
Tumblr we neeeeed youuuuu
Death penalty.
People find this offensive but the things children say over Call of Duty funny? I don't get where the line is between a genuine joke and crude rape joke.
Given the current climate of sexism in gaming, how can you fuck up this monumentally?!
I'm pretty sure this is a case of looking too far into things. Definitely could have chosen his words better, but I don't get any sexual/rape vibe from it, more of "The ass-kicking will be over momentarily." I dunno, maybe I'm in the minority on that.
Rape joke stuff aside, there's no blood ingame? Why?
People find this offensive but the things children say over Call of Duty funny? And I love dark humor, this was just bad context.
Called it When I was watching this live with a couple friends, I said at the time that some feminists are gunna say that he was raping her somehow.
Wooooooooooooooow. That was just uncalled for.
it wasn't even a rape joke looks like they just need to get their minds out of the gutter
They'll get over it.
man that is a really really poor choice of wording.
i love oversensitivity. i hate the xbox one and all it stands for but if you think this is a rape joke your mind is more perverted then you think.
Why do I feel like he would have said something differently if he was playing against another guy?
Poor choice of words perhaps but seriously, this is just overreacting.
not only it was misogynist, it was also just plain bad as jokes go. how the fuck the guy thought that would be "funny"? :v:
It didn't even occur to me that it was a rape joke.
To be honest, was expecting more of a stupid PewDiePie rape joke.
While I disagree it was a rape joke, microsoft has to realise a woman getting thrashed at video games while a guy makes creepy remarks is not good PR.
good ol' patricia hernandez here to save the day
oh. my. god.
Patricia Hernandez, who the fuck else?
i love oversensitivity. i hate the xbox one and all it stands for but if you think this is a rape joke your mind is more perverted then you think.
lets be honest here, the second part of the "joke" was creepy
oh. my. god.
Considering if you read the fucking article it's not just her that picked up that what was said was a little bit strange.
I can see some people are taking this a bit far, but it was a bad thing to say non-the less
Rape joke stuff aside, there's no blood ingame? Why?
If children were to see blood ingame, they would become mentally scarred for life and shoot up a high school.
oh. my. god.
Here we go again, another hack from Kotaku starting a shitstorm over nothing.
"I see nothing wrong with this and have no idea how anyone could find this offensive." - Microsoft E3 Team.
how were they supposed to stop it?
