TRENTON – State lawmakers have jump-started their drive to allow Tesla Motors to directly sell its electric cars in New Jersey.
Tesla used to sell its cars directly to New Jersey customers from stores in Garden State Plaza and The Mall at Short Hills, but in March 2014 the state Motor Vehicle Commission voted to begin applying the state law requiring cars to be sold through franchised retail dealers to Tesla.
This is good news for the guy I've seen driving his tesla around town.
Still doesn't change the law, in this case they just let Tesla setup what are essentially dealerships. But the fact that they even voted to allow Tesla into the dealership cartel is enough for Tesla to challenge similar laws in other states

Why would that be good news for him if he already owns a Tesla?

Better access to trained technicians and an increased focus on super charger stations probably.

They're not dealerships. They're Tesla Showrooms where you can buy their cars directly. They're not owned by a middleman.
The bill endorsed Monday by the Senate Commerce Committee in a 6-0 vote is limited to the direct sales of zero-emission electric cars only. It would allow manufacturers licensed by the state to directly sell cars at a maximum of four locations in the state and require them to operate at least one service facility.
They've had showrooms in New Jersey before, but the law forbid them from selling cars through them like in Texas and other states. Now they can, provided they have a service station(which they do).

NJ already has 3 showrooms, 3 superchargers, and 2 service stations.
Heh, good, good. I may loathe the Tesla and everything it stands for, but it has every right to be on the market. If people want to buy these things that's their right.

A dealership owned by the company itself is still a dealership. They can play semantics all day long, but in the end, you still buy a Tesla from a Tesla dealer. It's only that the Tesla dealer is owned and operated directly by Tesla Motors, rather than some random dude. The only difference between a Tesla dealer and a Ford dealer, aside from the wares, is the ownership of the place.
I'm utterly dumbfounded by Tesla being disallowed to sell their own goddamn cars in the first place. Literally every other company is allowed to sell its own product if it wants to, but for cars all of a sudden it's bad? Was there ever any reason for that aside from independent dealerships not liking a company skipping them?

Is there a website that has information like this?

I pass the Tesla showroom in Paramus on the way to my grandparent's house.
I should stop in sometime.

The majority of cars are sold through dealerships, with a smaller number being between citizens. Tesla however sells their cars right out of the factory, which makes dealerships redundant and threatens their existence. So dealerships in many states are lobbying to have the factory sale model banned. It's not about Tesla or their technology, it's about their business practices.
That said, I don't see why Elon can't just make a dummy company to sell his cars if they can't get around these anti-competitive laws.

It's exactly that, and the dealerships are throwing a lot into lobbying politicians to pass what are blatantly anti-competition laws.
Buying a car is the worst customer experience in the world, I would be incredibly happy if new car dealerships disappeared entirely and everyone could buy any car the way you can buy a Tesla.

uh no you idiot
do we call an apple store at the mall a apple dealership
no we call it an apple store, cause apple owns and operates it
We don't have these dealership protection laws here and you can tell companies are starting to shy away from even using the word. All the Ford commercials say to go to "your local Ford store" because they know dealership is just such a poisoned term.
Hell yeah.
Not that we can afford one, but still: hell yeah!

Ya but a place that sells cars is called a dealership not a carstore. Still this is a silly problem of the 1% who can afford to buy one of these directly

No, it's a store. Tesla distributes it, not a middleman authorized to do so.
