It's not entirely clear if this means the D-pad has replaced the trackpad wholesale, but it's hard to imagine using the rest of the pad for anything else with a big plus symbol protruding from it. Eventually it's just going to be a strangely shaped 360 controller
Still don't like
Eventually it's just going to be a strangely shaped 360 controller
Everything that was making it so unique is just being dropped by every new update.
I'm still butthurt they dropped the screen. At this point why wouldn't I just buy a 360 gamepad?
They should've kept the first design.
I bet you the d-pad is going to be a little rising bump thing on the touchpad itself, instead of an actual d-pad. They're just going to emulate a d-pad in software with it, which could be cool.
this thing sucks now i'd rather plug in my normal controller and use it
While I think it always looked bad and would never have used it at least before it was unique. Now you may as well just buy either Xbox controller. Though as I and many others have pointed out in the past controllers are the way they are because they fucking work, being different isn't good enough if the controller sucks. I am a little sad it doesn't look like a radio any more though.
Don't know why everyone is this thread is so mad, the only change from last time is the + shaped indent on the left trackpad.
I was hoping for a daunting yet surprisingly ergonomic series of levers, cranks and pulleys.
I don't think Valve are not very concerned about it being too similar to existing controllers. They're just experimenting a lot, and if it turns out that not a lot has to be changed about the current go-to gamepad designs, then that's just the realistic result they've ended up with. No point in making something that's less practical and only seems like a good idea until the initial novelty has worn off, especially if you're trying to establish a solid hardware infrastructure for the Steam Boxes.
Everything that was making it so unique is just being dropped by every new update.
Like it or not the original was trying to reinvent the wheel. For all the bells and whistles it's doubtful it was superior to existing controllers, more likely than not it was inferior. Which is why they've gone to a more conventional design. As for why to buy it over any other: the same reasons as any other, price and quality.
Like it or not the original was trying to reinvent the wheel. They need to just accept the fact that controllers take getting used to if they're innovated. If you want innovation you need to account for adaptation. Remember when they released this and we thought it was the best shit ever? It's because we just adapted to it.
If it was a gimmick why has it gone through so much design iterations?
Because they probably realized that some of the things they were trying to implement were gimmicky, so they did a bit of redesigning?

And how Playstation already had a superior controller which was improved upon further a year after the N64 came out?
I don't know why people are calling it a gimmick, it still has the right side (and maybe the left) trackpad which are miles better than analog sticks for aiming. The trackpads have always been the main point of the controller.

IMHO the wiiu pro controller is WAY better than the xbone controller, and the xbone controller is WAY better than the xbox 360 controller I'm going to have too many controllers once this comes out :v:
I'm still butthurt they dropped the screen. Something that makes me curious is the massively extruding rear triggers. If they go down as far as the ones in front, then that is quite some distance.
It's because we just adapted to it.
I actually really like the concept of the N64 controller. It was designed around what I would call "modes". That is, 2D and 3D modes. The d-pad area just got under utilized because very few 2D games came out for the N64, added onto the fact that the analog stick wears away over time. With modern controllers, you have to reach awkwardly over to the d-pad to play 2D games, which was especially bad on the Gamecube controller. I do have pretty small hands though.
I tested one of the models at GDC this year, and the Trackpad thingies really didn't work well with FPS's. A simple test chamber in Portal became near unplayable because of the feedback and the fact you could "fling" the camera around, something that is impossible with a mouse. As a result it was either you had to inch your aim slowly or inaccurately fling your camera and try and stop in in the right place. Fucking worked wonders with point n click and platformers however. It's a great option for games that don't need all the complexities of a keyboard to function but can use more precision than a standard analog stick.
Picture in the OP is old, this is actually thier most recent controller concept:
