A Brisbane man has been arrested following an investigation into the vandalism of Facebook tribute pages for slain children earlier this year.
There was widespread public outrage when tribute pages set up to honour Trinity Bates and Elliott Fletcher were defaced with graphic images posted online including child pornography, prompting police to launch an investigation.
Taskforce Argos detectives this morning charged an unemployed 29-year-old Tarragindi man over the matter.
Elliott Fletcher, 12, a student at St Patrick's College at Shorncliffe, died in February after he was allegedly stabbed by a fellow pupil.
Eight-year-old Bundaberg schoolgirl Trinity Bates was allegedly abducted and murdered the same month.
Friends set up tribute pages on the social networking website after the deaths, but police said the groups were then vandalised with offensive material - including images depicting child pornography.
At the time, Queensland Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Condon described the pornographic images posted on Elliott Fletcher's page as "some of the most disgusting material I've seen".
Police said detectives executed a search warrant on a private home today and allegedly found child exploitation material.
The man has been charged with two counts of using a carriage service in a menacing, harassing or offensive way, two charges of possessing child exploitation material and one charge of using a carriage service to distribute child exploitation material, the latter of which carries a maximum 10-year jail term.
However, Detective Superintendent Peter Crawford this afternoon told reporters "a number of people" were involved in the vandalism of the two pages and police inquiries were continuing.
He said the other alleged offenders did not appear to be from Brisbane.
Detective Superintendent Crawford said he believed the issue of trolling, where people posted offensive material on tribute pages to cause distress, would continue in the future.
"There are a number of people all around the world committing these offences known as trolling,'' he said.
"They just take pleasure in causing distress to people in communities around the world."
Detective Superintendent Crawford said five detectives from Taskforce Argos were involved in the investigation - resources which could have been used to prevent current child abuse.
"I would rather be using these resources to target actual offences being committed today than chasing down trollers," he said.
He appealed for parents to monitor their children's internet use and for tribute page administrators to "take responsibility" for actively monitoring their pages and removing inappropriate content.
"I think also that Facebook could be able to remove material that was inappropriate in a more timely way,'' he added.
The charged man is expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court this afternoon.
That sucks, but hey, at least he'll think twice before trolling.
I'm not a big fan of respecting the dead and such but that doesn't mean you should go out of your way to screw them over. What a dickhead.
I reckon soap will suddenly become a lot more slippery in his prison.

Then don't post/comment on it
Guys, he didn't get arrested for trolling, he got arrested for posting child porn. Read the fucking article.

Well, he was charged with "using a carriage service in a menacing, harassing or offensive way".
Not the main reason he was arrested though.
Gives a whole new meaning to "griefing"

People should be banned for not reading their own articles. If you're gonna post it, read the damn thing so you know what's going on.
The troll was banned.
Maybe he can explain his why he posted it and get unpermaed.
:v:
It was all fine up until the point where he decided to post shock images and child porn. He'll never be a fine troll like doug! :patriot:
