According to the comments, the parents weren't actually abusing the kid. They do things like this normally, and the kid is actually benefiting a lot from it. It's generally a family issue that runs past numerous generations of parents pushing their kids to the extreme.

Seems quite extreme but I do believe that this will make him a tough motherfucker.

My dad used to do a similar thing to me. except it was voluntary and he let me choose If I wanted to do it. he told me to go swim in nothing but shorts at the beach (I live in a quite cold area) I did it for a few years straight every day, even in winter. as a result I'm pretty resistant to the cold.
