• FBI cracks down on laser attacks
Laser pointers directed at helicopter and aeroplane pilots can temporarily blind those piloting the aircraft. The FBI says it has seen a sharp increase in such incidents since they began tracking them in 2005. Initially US officials offered the reward as an experiment in 12 cities in February. Now it will expand the effort across all 56 field offices in the US, Puerto Rico and Guam for 90 days. The latest known incident happened on 23 May, when a pilot approaching New York's LaGuardia Airport said someone shone a laser into his aircraft at 5,000 ft (1,524m). The beam was tracked to a residential area eight miles away. And in March, a California man was sentenced to 14 years in prison for shining a laser pointer at police and hospital helicopters. The law enforcement agency and the Federal Aviation Administration recorded fewer than 300 laser attacks in 2005. In 2013, they recorded nearly 4,000.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-27690471
And in March, a California man was sentenced to 14 years in prison for shining a laser pointer at police and hospital helicopters.
What a dick.
People who do this are fucking terrible.
There has to be a way to record the exact location the beam of light is coming from and then simply send police on the ground to that location.
Report these assholes, get money. Sounds fair enough to me. [thumb]http://www.laserpointersafety.com/resources/FAA-photo-laser3-highest-res-1936x1296.jpg[/thumb] Yeah fuck being in control of a huge airplane and having that happen. This bullshit isn't worth the giggles people get from it because they don't know how much it can fuck with pilots.
Aren't there like, trap planes that have sensors for this kind of thing to catch assholes in the act?
How fucking powerful are those lasers?
Equip planes with laser light tracking missiles. Problem solved.
There has to be a way to record the exact location the beam of light is coming from and then simply send police on the ground to that location.
People who do this are often arrested already, because of how easy it is to pinpoint their location.
I flew over Paris one time coming back from Switzerland, green laser pointer literally shined right in my eyes :v: It takes a certain level of stupid to do this.
Equip planes with laser light tracking missiles. Problem solved.
That's both idiotic and impracticable.
That's both idiotic and impracticable.
Obviously he wasn't being serious christ it's a joke that plays off being an overkill solution
How fucking powerful are those lasers?
They don't have to be too powerful. At night, the coherent beam is blinding as shit. Plus it's so focused that it barely loses power at distance. If somebody stuck a flashlight to the cockpit glass from the outside, it would blind the shit out of the pilots as well. What's special about the laser is that it stays powerful at range.
And because of motherfuckers like those, laser use gets banned for people who actually want to do something useful with them.
That's both idiotic and impracticable.
I would also equip you with a sarcasm detecting sensor.
Wow, I read the article completely shocked that this was such a big deal. C'mon, a laser? They barely show up on the wall 20 feet away. But holy fuck that video. That's some intense light happening. I can't believe it.
i just had an idea this could be used as a weapon, just get something like a phalanx and replace it with a giant laser and have the colors change quickly

At night, and especially refracted through cockpit glass, the beam becomes blinding and can bathe the entire cockpit in green light. You can imagine that using instruments and reading digital screens becomes pretty difficult on top of the blind spots it can leave in your vision. I had a friend who used to shine lasers at helicopters and he genuinely thought it was just a funny practical joke and the pilots might think it's funny that someone's pointing a laser at them, but after I showed him that video he quit. I think a lot of these people have the same thought process.
That's both idiotic and impracticable.
And it won´t work. You can use lasers to designate targets because the beam scatters when it hits something, making the sensor in the missile able to see it. But a laser fired by itself is focused on one point. The guy lasering would have to hit the missiles head where the sensor is housed in, otherwise the missile wouldnt see shit.

I have a few I built that I am afraid to even turn on because they are so intensely bright.
Honestly they should make it more known that this is a bad thing. If I didn't read it on the internet, I would have never known. I can imagine quite a few of these idiots have no idea they're actually doing harm, or that they can go to jail for 2 decades.

Like not looking into welding arcs
Aren't there like, trap planes that have sensors for this kind of thing to catch assholes in the act?
Probably not, but that's a million dollar idea if I've ever heard of one. Only thing I'd change is that they should equip all planes with this kind of technology, in case some seriously fucked-in-the-head bastard wises up to these "trap planes".
Simple , we strap larger lasers to the planes and blast back. Then were half way to Starwars.

Imagine the kind of havoc that could be wreaked if they had violet-colored lasers instead (violet being the strongest form of visible light, for people who haven't taken chemistry or physics classes before).
I thought it is just common sense? Like not looking into welding arcs
Common sense is still a commodity that's on the decline of late, so it shouldn't be surprising that people do stupid shit and get punished for it.
My 100mW 405nm (violet) laser seems a lot less bright than the cheapo $10 green lasers from amazon though...
Well obviously it's going to depend on the strength of the device you're using as well, but talking from a scientific standpoint, these pilots should at least count their blessings that nobody has (seemingly) tried to use strong violet lasers yet.
