The Oregon Health Authority said the girl likely acquired the disease from a flea bite during a hunting trip near Heppner on Oct. 16. She got sick five days later and was admitted to the intensive care unit at a Bend hospital. No other people in Crook County have been infected with the plague, according to OHA spokesman Jonathan Modie. Epidemiologists with Oregon Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working with Crook, Deschutes and Morrow County health officials to investigate the illness.
Geez. What's next, scurvy? :/
It's unusual in Oregon.
Usually it's dysentery.
Geez. What's next, scurvy? :/
tons of people get scurvy too
I thought the Pacific Northwest was where this usually popped up in the US nowadays? Apparently not, looks like the four corner states get it the worst: Still gets a fair amount, though.
Nah, dry and sunny is usually the most fertile breeding ground; lots of rats and fleas, not much to eat them owing to the climate, usually the end of fall and beginning of spring are the peak periods.

Even if the fatality rate is extremely low, it's fucking scary to hear 'so yeah you got the plague'
This is like sensationalism gold
I would hardly call 7.1% an extremely low fatality rate.
I would hardly call 7.1% an extremely low fatality rate.
I think this is across the world, so it's skewed by the places where you can actually catch the plague are the same places where there's extremely low living standards.
Oh fuck. I think my family knows that case in Illinois.
I didn't even notice the one up there.
Usually it's dysentery.
Or the elusive snake bite.
