Post-traumatic stress disorder—PTSD—can linger years after someone has experienced or witnessed something extremely upsetting. It may be accompanied by panic attacks, flashbacks, and nightmares, and it can be fiendishly difficult to treat. But experimental types of treatment could soon lend a hand.
In a pilot study, South Carolina psychiatrist Michael Mithoefer is targeting PTSD with a controversial drug: methylenedioxymethamphetamine, or MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy. He gave MDMA, along with psychotherapy, to 21 participants who had developed treatment-resistant PTSD as a result of experiences with crime or war. Only 15 percent of the MDMA-treated subjects continued to experience PTSD afterward, as opposed to 85 percent of the subjects who received psychotherapy with a placebo. Mithoefer considers the findings especially notable given that 20 of the 21 participants had previously failed to obtain relief from FDA-approved treatments. “The next step is to find out if this can be replicated elsewhere”

There's hope for me yet!
:psypop: So many big words
goddamn, do want/do not want :/
Watch this turn into "Uhh I have PTSD, yeah... Just give me the damn ecstasy"
I've done ecstasy before, it DOES fuck up your brain, there wouldn't be much use except for the most extreme cases of PTSD in which you would only need to take it once, taking it more than once can fuck up your chemistry in crazy ways.
The only mainstream drug that really has a medicinal use is weed.
This just in, something that makes you feel good helps when you're seriously stressed the fuck out. More on that at 11.

Maybe you just got a crappy pill?
Also, even though there's a very small sample size going on here (shenanigans?) I'm going to hazard a guess and say that a psychiatrist who's doing scientific studies probably has a better idea about the efficacy of MDMA in treating PTSD patients than a 15 year old from Michigan.

Go to hell, heroin was originally medicinal.

Recreational MDMA use is rarely associated with permanent neurological damage. The brain "spots" that older MDMA studies put emphasis on turned out to be depleted serotonin reserves that naturally refill over time.
Ecstasy was also originally medicinal.

Morphine, too.
[editline]02:59PM[/editline]
I notice it mentions a placebo at one point.
When you're dealing with MDMA, I think I placebo would be pretty obvious.
I guess their treatment-resistant PTSD was..
methylenedioxymethamphetamine-ized

No. Just no.
Just take my advice right now, and quit while you're not entirely in last place.
Tiny amount of test subjects and can't it fuck some of the soldiers up.
Remember there's a difference between pure MDMA and the drug, ecstacy, that you'd buy off the street. The MDMA they'd be using in these tests would be a medical-grade narcotic and not some questionable blank pill that could be cut with god knows what.
i like ecstasy
Oh my God, I love this thread man.
LSD was used successfully to treat psychiatric problems too, so I don't doubt this at all.

Quite right, ecstasy is normally cut with either cocaine, methamphetamine, or heroine. Pure MDMA, or "molly", would be an exception to this.
I reckon that the phrase "This party's traumatic!" will soon enter modern language.
Ecstasy addicts must be in ecstasy right now.

Ecstasy is fun. I've done it in front of you before.

I doubt you did actual MDMA then. It does not fuck with your brain. What it does is gives you a surge of Serotonin. After the "trip" your Serotonin levels are down for all of 24 hours, you just don't feel much of anything after words. The only damage it causes in any way is if you engage in strenuous exercise during the "trip". Don't spout bullshit when you have no idea what you're talking about. People can do MDMA many times in their lives, and no serious psycho-somatic effects have been recorded as a direct cause of the drug.
And no, many drugs around have medical uses. LSD has proven results in saving people from life threatening, and life changing headaches. Weed has its area of fighting impoverishment in cancer patients, and generally improving their lives. Vicodin, the drug House is so loved for taking, is an opiate about 2 steps removed from Heroin. I could go on, but so many people just hear the words "Drugs are bad" and take it to heart without knowing WHY they're bad.

As someone else said, No. Not really. It can be, but most dealers WON'T sell that because they'd lose business.
[editline]02:55PM[/editline]
And note, I am not saying "LOL DRUGS ARE GOOD". I'm saying drugs are neutral substance that depends on your relation to them if they are good, or bad. Drugs CAN NOT ruin your life. You can. The drugs I mentioned do have downsides, but they also have upsides, and taking them won't ruin your life unless you let them.
If you're going to be anti drug, or pro drug, learn your shit first and know that there are risks, and know that if you're going to take them, there can be side effects, but that this is 100% your fault.
What about the depression from the comedown?
Not a major issue. It's either not there at all, or it's taken care of by taking vitamin supplements after, or during the trip. Doing so helps eliminate, and lessen the come down.

Different times.
Anything in excessive amounts can kill. But seeing as the doctor is giving it in controlled amounts, there shouldn't be any damage to the brain.
I think it's pretty obvious he just wanted an excuse to feed people ecstasy and laugh as he watches them trip out.
wot

taking the drug a lot is not good though, I believe it fucks with your brain only if you abuse it.
and note, ecstasy used to be used by therapists before it was illegal, hopefully it will go back to that by these good results.

Abuse of anything has bad effects. Everyone knows that. Or should.

that's very true, but I think we'd be suprised how many people are ignorant of substance abuse.
