It was recently uncovered, on a Bing Maps image, that a Russian fighter, that was previously thought to have been canned, was out on the tarmac of a Russian military base. The plane, the Mikoyan Project 1.44, was thought to have been put to bed in 2001, but as the image shows Russia has at least one of them still around and could have resurrected the program recently.
The image of the plane raises a lot of questions, such as if the plan has been resurrected by the Russians to build a fighter jet that is comparable to the F-22 Raptor (the 1.44’s original goal), or if this is simply an old prototype that was rolled out onto the tarmac to give the impression that the program was alive and well, when in reality, it’s nothing more than to throw off military analysts.
Are you sure the map data just isn't decades old? :v:
Nah, in all seriousness, it's probably just there to be transported somewhere and taken apart or something.
looking around that airport sure shows how varied Russian military planes look, I like them.

I think they got a Concorde standing there as well.
I would look at this if I knew how to use bing maps correctly.
I love how there's also a deprecated soviet space shuttle just casually parked on the grass at that same airport.
Sure, it may be able to see Russian aircrafts, but can it see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal?
Bing didn't really find anything. Whatever company Microsoft pulls it's satellite images from found it.

Probably a Tu-144
[editline]3rd July 2013[/editline]
Yeah
While several Tu-144s were donated to museums in Moscow Monino, Samara and Ulyanovsk, at least two Tu-144D remained in open storage in Moscow Zhukovsky
I can easily see how you would get them mixed up.

Where is the Buran? I can't seem to find it.

Never mind, got it, the birds eye view and Ariel are taken at different times.
Isn't Russia almost littered with discarded military hardware?
Considering the surroundings that really doesn't look like the kind of place you would be testing a top secret military aircraft.
Theres what looks like an Mi-26 in the area bellow the plane, that shit is old.
Though im more curious as to what these things are.

Looks like Tupolev 22M backfires to me. Supersonic bombers with swing-wings.
Bing Maps is better than Google Maps only for its Birds Eye View function.
Its sitting there cause they had an airshow and didn't bother to move it yet afterwards.

I'd almost say yeah but those things have the big air intakes on the sides, this things perfectly smooth down the wings.

Hot dog we have a winner
Pretty neat, there is a lot of cool aircraft there. I read that airport was used as a testbed for many aircraft. I see there is at least one that did not test well. Didn't even bother to pick it up. Fuck it leave it in the woods.

I wish they kept the Buran/Energia in service, i read somewhere that the Buran was actually safer than our shuttle, and the Energia rocket was an overpowered monster, capable of putting 100 tons into LEO.
It's also the only vehicle to autonomously lift off, orbit, and then land, apparently.
Isn't Russia almost littered with discarded military hardware?
aka it could be a bums home
There seems to be a lot of crashed planes around that place.
So in other words, a soviet-era prototype fighter has been spotted parked amongst various other soviet-era prototypes and aircraft. Must be a secret project!

Is it the contrails?

Noticed that too. It's creepy in a way. The forested region is littered with abandoned hulks of varying sizes. Wonder why'd they just leave them there...
