• Creativity 'closely entwined with mental illness'
Creativity is often part of a mental illness, with writers particularly susceptible, according to a study of more than a million people. Writers had a higher risk of anxiety and bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, unipolar depression, and substance abuse, the Swedish researchers at the Karolinska Institute found. They were almost twice as likely as the general population to kill themselves. The dancers and photographers were also more likely to have bipolar disorder. "It is important that we do not romanticise people with mental health problems, who are too often portrayed as struggling creative geniuses" - Beth Murphy (The mental health charity Mind) As a group, those in the creative professions were no more likely to suffer from psychiatric disorders than other people. But they were more likely to have a close relative with a disorder, including anorexia and, to some extent, autism, the Journal of Psychiatric Research reports. Lead researcher Dr Simon Kyaga said the findings suggested disorders should be viewed in a new light and that certain traits might be beneficial or desirable. For example, the restrictive and intense interests of someone with autism and the manic drive of a person with bipolar disorder might provide the necessary focus and determination for genius and creativity. Similarly, the disordered thoughts associated with schizophrenia might spark the all-important originality element of a masterpiece.
Further info at source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19959565
Could this explain Minecraft players
In other words normal people are boring.
Could this explain Minecraft players
I compulsively play Minecraft on creative mode because I can never remember the crafting recipes and can't be bothered to use the wiki while playing
Well that would explain why I feel nothing but sadness every waking moment of my fucking life. Can't even write anymore, because there's just no point.

Look at people with severe schizophrenia. What they draw is abstract as hell, but I'd be damned if it isn't also some of the most artistic stuff I've seen.
Yeah, that's pretty much me.
Look at people with severe schizophrenia. "Shh, she has schizophrenia, remember? Just be glad we live in a huge house because of her expensive abstract art." I'm a horrible person.
i thought this was already really well known
now all I need to figure out is Am I extraordinarily imaginative, or just have too much damn free time? [editline]16th October 2012[/editline] this explains why buckethead is so good at music
Don't believe 'em man they're trying to oppress us the MAN is trying to make us SLAVES DOWN WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT
Hmm, the thing about writers actually would explain a good bit about my father. He has always been moody and depressed and prone to sharp, sudden changes in attitude and at least mildly paranoid. And he wants to be a famous novelist.
I'm unimaginitive as fuck when it comes to things like art and writing. Guess that some how makes me normal (albeit uninteresting).
Don't worry! you can still be something creative! Like an engineer, a billionaire... or... astronaut, or a cop! or a politician! just because you can't be a morbidly insane drunk doesn't mean you're uninteresting!
i'm not surprised to hear this. the liberal left revels in 'art' and 'music'- when the real things that matter are fixing the economy. friedman never bothered with that useless stuff...
Musician; poet; writer Bipolar :v:
Similarly, the disordered thoughts associated with schizophrenia might spark the all-important originality element of a masterpiece.
Adds a little bit of joy to my life being previously diagnosed as a schizo and all. :suicide:

my grandmother suffered from schizophrenia and was an amazing writer and artist, it all makes sense now
they say most creative and revolutionary thinkers have always been misfits and daydreamers, if people think imagination is abnormal then that's their problem.
Nothing new. As a overly creative person with general anxiety disorder, I also know that many of my creative friends have a lot of "luggage" when it comes to their mental health.
not suggesting at all that homosexuality is a mental illness, but is it just a coincidence that some artistic geniuses and scientific geniuses were (also allegedly) homosexual? I tried my best to word that carefully cause I'm not here to offend.
Don't believe 'em man they're trying to oppress us the MAN is trying to make us SLAVES DOWN WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT
More of, some of my best friends are undeniably troubled with various mental things while being absolutely amazing people. I don't think problem is defining and describing illnesses they might have. Problem is judging them such people as lesser. I have some light ADHD and I am moodier than the the weirdest bitch, and I realize retrospectively that I do seriously stupid shit at times and harm the people who care about me. That's why I love them even more and am more than glad to ignore their own problems. I am supposedly both intelligent and and creative, so I guess life is a bit like an RPG. Good perks come with some bad to balance them out. [sp]except these people who seem perfect in all ways, hnngh how I hate them[/sp]
it doesn't stop at creativity either Einstein showed a lot of signs of autism
They say there's a fine line between genius and madness, though actually it's like there's more of an overlap than you'd think. I'm pretty creative and whatnot, and I was diagnosed with Asperger's at a young age. Managed to get through life alright, though nowadays I dunno how well things are going in general. Probably just a phase.
A risk I'm willing to take to not have a fucking boring life
I compulsively play Minecraft on creative mode because I can never remember the crafting recipes and can't be bothered to use the wiki while playing
Nice!
As a dancer and writer I am deeply offended.
maybe the ones that have mental diseases are the ones that are "studying" them
Considering that every writer ever has depression this isn't a surprise.
Unusual thoughts -> unusual actions -> unusual art Doesn't seem that amazing a connection.
