The XBox One Trainwreck Continues: Mandatory Region Locking Confirmed
The Xbox One will be region-locked, meaning all software must match the region of the console itself, Microsoft confirmed to Digital Trends. This means a US Xbox One won't be able to play games imported from Europe or Japan, for example.
For those who don't know, the 360 currently has optional region locking, which means that a region lock is only enforced if the dev/publisher of the game wants it to be. The PS3 has no region locking at all except for a single game, Persona 4 Arena .

It's like they're at gunpoint, forced to make the console as shitty as possible.
lol i think MS is paid by Sony to literally do this shit, how can someone shot himself more than one time?
Maybe they want to force the bar down so low... that when it can't possibly get any worse... they'll start to fix it and then we'll all swoon over at E3 2099
Every day it just gets more and more [del]horrible[/del] hilarious.
-snip-
region locking made sense when tvs couldn't handle anything but their native format, be it ntsc or pal. why do we still have it.

Money.

Russian roulette with a semi-automatic.

What AR said. The only reason Persona 4 got region locked is because at the time of release, the USD was absurdly weak vs the Yen. It cost $60 here, but nearly $92 in Japan due to the exchange rate, and Atlus was afraid that no one would buy it in Japan and just import the US version
Money.
but that doesn't make sense. it's not like I'm taking money out of the developer's / publisher's bank account when an imported title gets shipped to me. they still receive the money because SOMEONE has to buy the game, right?

oh well there you go I guess, mystery solved. still dumb.
Someone somewhere will be bound to smash through these restrictions. Mark my words.
I'm actually interested. Hardcore gamers are going to hate the Xbox One, but I'm really not sure if MS' s actions will have an effect. Why? Because they are appealing to publishers and what they want. So if MS gets publisher support that may get gamers to buy the next Xbox anyway.
What.. Where.. Why are they doing this?

North Korea paid them so they wouldn't be noticed as much.
Region locking seems to be becoming more and more popular in general, sadly.
It's like they forgot they had competition.

Like Forumaster and I said: there's money to be made. Without region locking people can import copies of games from areas where it's cheaper to get around inflation or price-hikes.
I knew it. Everyone in charge of the Xbox One is a masochist.
Fuck this gen, I'm getting a Famulator, Legend Of Zelda, Metroid, Super Mario Bros, Galaga, and a bunch of Chinese/Taiwanese carts. No social features, no DRM, no TV, no shit motion controls, no ads, just pure games.
With all this money I save, I will essentially Press Start To Rich.
I'm seriously considering buying a Famiclone, they are more affordable than the NESes at the local second hand shops.
I blame the Dendy Chronicles.
It is as if Microsoft WANT to have poor sales. What the fuck are they thinking? This is ridiculous!
The original article says nothing about it being mandatory, not sure why it would be anyway (That's up to the publishers to decide)
It's like they're at gunpoint, forced to make the console as shitty as possible.
They still have a lot to go. I want to hear them admit the specs are lower than originally planned.
I'm waiting for them to say there is actually no dogs because of last minute changes.
All of this is going to seriously make me consider dropping the Halo franchise.
Why is this such an surprise? The xbox had it, the xbox 360 had it, Wii had it etc, etc.
Sure, it's stupid at hell, but I really don't think that MS decided this but the Distributors/publishers..
Nintendo consoles have always been region locked?
People are surprised by this?
Interesting, because every PS4 game will be available digitally

This is a perfect example of how to do things right.
While Microsoft provide a perfect example of how to fuck everything up.
yes, i'd say this is much more on the side of publisher's lobbying heavily for it than it is anything else, but it is unfortunate none the less
