JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Management at the Goodrich Capital 8 Theaters is defending what it calls a publicity stunt at the movie theaters this past weekend. During the opening weekend of the latest 'Iron Man' movie, a man walked into the theater in full tactical gear and carrying a fake gun....
http://www.abc17news.com/news/movie-theater-publicity-stunt-triggers-officers-to-respond-to-active-shooter-situation/-/18421100/20089958/-/66o97fz/-/index.html
Fucking really? With all the recent shootings they thought this was a good idea?
How terrifying.
only a few people were upset, but hundreds were entertained.
Would have sucked if this were an actual shooter.
there is bad judgment, then theres just plain dumb then theres this
Guess common sense called in sick that day
"We apologize and are sympathetic to those who felt they were in harm’s way with our character promotion for Iron Man 3. This was not a publicity stunt. We have worked with the Cosplacon group on many movies to dress up and help entertain our customers. We have had many complaints about the members dressed specifically as S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives carrying fake guns. We didn’t clearly tell our customers and some people didn’t realize it was for entertainment purposes only. We apologize that police were called to come out to our theater. We have a wonderful working relationship with the Jefferson City Police Department. Going forward we will take the necessary steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Security and safety for our customers is our number one priority."
Even without the shootings this sounds like an extremely dumb idea.
So the manager says that safety and the security of their guests is their number one priority, so they decide that letting a man in all this gear walk into a dark theater is a good idea. Ok. I mean, ok, it was fake. Great. But if it was real then things would be drastically different.
Whatever happened to all of those lessons that causing fear and anarchy is illegal and extremely dangerous? In my area when I grew up the example that was always given was "Don't shout 'Fire!' in a movie theater". Did people just decide to stop being intelligent?
Who in the fucking fuck thought this was a good idea I can't even comprehend the though processes that would lead to thinking this was acceptable
"we thought it would be funny if we dressed up the principle in full tactical gear and gave him an AK at our preschool's field day"
I was reading this earlier, it's actually a pretty cool idea for an opening just implemented badly. You could have prewarned people but that would have ruined it, still would have been awesome if noone got freaked out.
I can't help but worry that in the "if only people in the audience had a gun this could have been prevented" romanticized scenario, you could end up with some hero opening fire to stop what they thought was another adam lanza walking in then who's to stop a second hero from thinking that guy is a lunatic then opening fire on him and so forth narrow what-ifs but it only takes one misunderstanding
I've seen star wars characters dressed up with guns and such(before all this shooting stuff of course). Assuming there was a guy dressed up as Iron Man, the Shield agent should have been standing near him, not walking in from the parking lot all dressed up. Probably would've been best to just leave the guns out of it.
Wow cool I was fearing for my life and the lives of my family and friends for a second there im so entertained
A guy in an Iron Man suit? Yeah that would be cool. Even a guy as one of the Avengers(Cap/Hulk/Thor) would work. Better still a Black Widow. A nondescript 'tactical' guy with a gun? Come on! That's stupid even in concept, forget about how it'll actually play out.
Basically some flake got nervous over toys and called the police saying there was a shooter. Police go in ready for some lead rain to be dropping, and it was just some guy Cosplaying basically. Not the theater's fault or the police's fault, it's that dumb fuck who freaked out's fault The bad part is that guy or woman is probably proud of themselves
this isn't really that bad

Probably something like: "There's someone with a gun walking into this crowded theatre."
"Oh oops, dropped my badge in the hall sorry guys please stop screaming"
Why didn't they just dress someone up in an Iron Man costume and have him say a couple one-liners or something?

However, this is fucked up.

I wonder how many people in this thread read the article. They didn't have one guy dress up in tactical gear with an assault rifle and just walk into a theater as the title and blurb suggest. They had a couple of actors dressed up as the film villains, with another guy dressed as Iron Man, standing around in the lobby as a promotion, with clearly fake guns. Still a bad idea, but at least understandable. These guys don't look like mass killers, they look like convention attendees. I always thought what would happen if there's a robber in a mall? One person goes 'hero' and shoots him, someone hears the shots and turns around to see a dead man and an armed man, and fires at the armed man, and people fire at him, and it just becomes a clusterfuck. Only people who are trained and restrained should be allowed to be armed with a loaded weapon in public.

That is to say- you can not bring a gun legally to a mall. And if the argument is then- but you can illegally bring one, sure but ppl can do that without the permit. I always find the "untrained ppl with guns" to be slightly overblown. You don't spend the time and money on the paperwork (which involves training btw) on a whim. It's not the ppl that carry legally you have to worry about -its the ones who carry illegally.
