Im a total noob when it comes to overclocking. ive googled how to overclock but i want to know the specific way to overclock the CPU i have. i'd like to make it 3 GHZ. anyone care to help me with this? do i need extra cooling? ( runs at 39°C at the moment )
Does your Dell even HAVE the option to overclock?
uhh i think so.
[editline]11:54PM[/editline]
wait how do i check that?
if it is a dell the bios is probably locked
[editline]05:58PM[/editline]
also 240mhz won't make a difference
you mean 340
[editline]12:04AM[/editline]
ok ok but how do i check for myself in the bios? what parts should normally be unlocked?
When you boot up, can you get into BIOS, try pressing delete as you boot up (before the windows loading screen) if anything happens then you probably can.
Bah didn't refresh thread. Check to see if there's any advanced options sections or things related to CPU you can see.
i can get to the bios and at the overclocking section it say something about fsb but i do see some parts are gray wich means they are locked.
Increase the FSB.
[editline]02:16AM[/editline]
But not excessively, do like 10 MHz at a time.
Go into the BIOS and just up the multiplier.

how much?
[QUOTE=camper182;16706032]how much?[/QUOTE]
Hah, depends on how much you want to overclock it.
All the way I think is 24x.
cant get to the multiplier its locked. i did something with the fsb. raised it by 20 and my cpu's fan was going fucking crazy and it wouldnt boot so i said fuck it im just leaving it at 2.66 GHZ.

i didnt even know if i was touching the right thing.

Run a stress test firstplz.

[I]iottt, Welcome to the forum. Sorry to butt in blahman, ;) iottt, unfortunatly with you current configuration you will not be able to oc your CPU in BIOS. The stock mobo and the new Quad 45nm's are not able to be oc'd even 1MHz in the FSB. If you have the Nvidia Performance Tool installed you might see a small gain of about 9-12% and then your system might lock on you.
So to oc your CPU, it will take a small investment for a new mobo and maybe memory depending on which board you choose (DDR2 or DDR3).

well fuck apparently its impossible.

i downloaded CPU-Z what do you want me to do now?

Hmm..you've surpassed the parameters of my CPU knowledge. No clue. This guy seems right though, I wouldn't fuck with it any more.
lets just forget about that what i posted from that site.
how do i do that stress test?

Click the link I posted and download that. Run the test and then stop it if your core temps exceed..ehh lets say 75C.
ok i downloaded it. i now have the screen with all the cpu information ... now how do i do that test?

I believe there's a start button..hey can't Google answer these questions?
no i googled before i asked.
[editline]05:16AM[/editline]
and there is no start button lol

Whoopsies. Wrong link.

yeah guess, i asked on the 630i forums and here is the confirmation that overclocking is impossible.
[I]Hello camper,
Since you have no signature, I'm guessing you have the original mobo (650i nForce) and have not made any changes.
So here you go: The bad news.... you can't oc any of the Q9000 series CPU's using the stock mobo. The has to do with Dell's BIOS chip along with some other issues.
Your only choice if you want to oc your CPU is to buy a new mobo. You can either go with the 780i series with DDR2 memory or the 790i series with DDR3 memory.
The latter (790i & DDR3 memory) will imo give you better performance, but it will be a little more expensive.
For the mobo's I would suggest:
1) EVGA
2) XFX
3) Gigabit
I am somewhat partial to EVGA, but also know that XFX and Gigabit are very good manufacturers as well; so any of the three would be a good choice.
Memory:
1) Patriot Vipers (Green Sticks)
2) Mushkin
3) Corsair
4) Crucial
All of these would be very good choices for these mobos.
Good luck :)[/I]
