Despite being built to tackle piracy, Nintendo's latest handheld has been "hacked" for use with R4 cards, at least according to Japanese gamers who posted their antics on Youtube. Bear in mind that, since this uses an R4, only the DS side of things have been infiltrated. You won't be able to steal -- sorry, "back up" -- your 3DS games just yet, but it seems you'll be able to do it with your old DS library. Although most are calling this a hack, some argue that the use of an R4 Card isn't "hacking" per se. Whatever you want to call it, the 3DS' software has been bypassed in order to get the cards running, so it's dodgy no matter what label you want to slap on it. As far as the dedicated 3DS software goes, only time will tell if that's an uncrackable nut. Probably not.
That's amazing Security you boasted about there Nintendo!
thieves and hooligans are already able to have their way with it
:q: That's some good security though.
They built a crack-proof safe without bothering to check if the safe-crackers had nuclear door openers?
They built a crack-proof safe without bothering to check if the safe-crackers had nuclear door openers?
what
what
Metaphor
Like any of you didn't see this coming. Hacking will never stop.
why are they acting like the people who did this are assholes they are coming off as soccer mom jerks
Here's hoping such efforts are mirrored with the NGP launch.
Companies should just leave their hardware and software open just to save us the time and effort.
Make a thread when something good happens.
I'm not surprised to be honest.
No, it was not "hacked". All they did was get the thing to accept DS mode flashcarts. Big fucking deal.
thats called hacking it to make it support ds mode flashcarts
I guess the challenge was accepted.
I wonder if Nintendo even bothered to test out the 3DS with existing flash carts. As long as Nintendo handles the situation as well as any future situations in a good manner (unlike Sony), then it all should go well. I don't recall them ever screwing up in the anti-piracy bit except for one of their patches that had the chance of bricking unmodded Wiis.
Companies should just leave their hardware and software open just to save us the time and effort.
Something like that would work well for the company wouldn't it? Like one of those "trust" sort of deals no? In a sense they could sneak in a few nicks in their EULA/ToA/Etc, so that they can render users liable for "breaking trust". I wonder what is in their EULA/ToA/Etc for the 3DS anyways.
Nintendo is horrible for designing hardware securities. All of their consoles up to date are still fairly easy to mod and exploit.
You realise that this is only DS-level R4 flash carts? In other words, it isn't compromising the security of the 3DS hardware, hell hackers haven't even been able to "hack" the DSi. R4 still works because of original DS card compatibility. There has been no work to crack or hack 3DS' protection. Because of that, the R4 cards can't use the 3DS features, no gyro support, no 3D, no using the full graphical powers of the 3DS, just simply playing a "DS Game" which happens to be R4.
Fucking yes. i'm totally getting one!
Hopefully the new psp will be cracked this soon. I remember when I bought my psp slim I took it home opened the box and plugged it right into my pc to hack it.
I called it. Nintendo are terrible with security.
Would sound great, but real R4's aren't produced for years now all of them out there are just clones.
To be honest, looks like they didn't even change the security from the DS.
Didn't they say before the 3DS would be unhackable? Where is your god now, Nintendo? But, well, this is indeed a good thing, can't wait for the homebrew possibilities of this :q:
About time, i got worried.
maybe it was a marketing ploy to get all the haggers to buy a 3ds?!?!?!
maybe it was a marketing ploy to get all the haggers to buy a 3ds?!?!?!
Wouldn't be surprised if it was true, Sony did something similar with the PS1/2, creating/selling chips and such
Buying this first, I'm glad that the 3DS is backwards compatible. *cough NGP cough*

It shouldn't be long before they have it fully hacked.
The 3DS will reduce piracy because the effect doesn't work if you wear an eyepatch.
Buying this first, I'm glad that the 3DS is backwards compatible. *cough NGP cough*
PSP's are fucking cheap now. They're practically giving them away now that they have a shit ton of cheap bundles in existence. If you want to play a psp game just use a psp.
It's analogy time~
