The recording also caught the doctors calling the man names, mocking his health, and planning how to avoid him after the surgery. At one point, Ingham calls the patient “annoying” and suggests that the gastroenterologist performing the surgery fake an urgent summons in order to escape a post-op discussion. Farid Khairzada, one of the jurors in the case, told the Post that the man had asked for $1.75 million and that the $500,000 was a compromise between a juror who did not believe the man deserved to win any money and at least one who felt he should receive more.
Whether intentional or not, I think it is safe to say most of us will look forward to 'accidentally' leaving our phone recorder on during extended surgery.
The typo in the title made me thing insutis was some sort of disease
How was the phone allowed in? Wouldn't that be a H&S violation?
How was the phone allowed in? Wouldn't that be a H&S violation?
It was an accident.
a juror who did not believe the man deserved to win any money and at least one who felt he should receive more.
What it comes down to is whether or not you're a professional. If you want to fuck around, then hit the bricks. If your mentality is to talk shit about the person you're operating on, then I don't want you to operate on me, because that says that you can't be serious in a serious situation and you also don't have the right mindset for keeping your patients alive.
Why the hell were those surgeons so bitter? I understand that being a surgeon comes with a lot of stress but if that's their release, that's pretty fucked up lmao
One thing this article doesn't mention is that it wasn't just insults, they falsified a hemorrhoid diagnosis for kicks. The jury apparently decided that even though calling him names doesn't meet the legal requirements for defamation, they awarded him the money simply because it was such unprofessional behavior. Like, y'know, talking shit about the guy that's asleep in front of you and that you're about to cut open and poke around inside with pointy stuff. Anything that keeps a scalpel from being driven into a lung is fine with me Just my opinion, then again I dunno if I even really agree with this guy getting paid off [editline]25th June 2015[/editline]
One thing this article doesn't mention is that it wasn't just insults, they falsified a hemorrhoid diagnosis for kicks. Wheel of annoying patients we go. Where it’ll land, nobody knows,” Ingham reportedly said. Ingham then mocked the man for attending Mary Washington College, once an all-women’s school, and wondered aloud whether her patient was gay, the suit states. Then the anesthesiologist said, “I’m going to mark ‘hemorrhoids’ even though we don’t see them and probably won’t,” and did write a diagnosis of hemorrhoids on the man’s chart, which the lawsuit said was a falsification of medical records. After declaring the patient a “big wimp,” Ingham reportedly said: “People are into their medical problems. They need to have medical problems.” Shah replied, “I call it the Northern Virginia syndrome,” according to the suit
I cannot fathom what a medically-ill man can do that warrants such senseless hostility.
You know, when you see a bunch of life or death situations in the OR every day potentially is assume that you'd have an extremely cynical attitude about your job. Not that it's an excuse but I mean, it's partially understandable.

Great, I've had a colonoscopy and a gastroskopy just hours ago and I though exactly that, maybe I should leave my cellphone on record, especially since the staff seemed especially bitter. Goddamnit, just thinking what they MIGHT have said or done makes me never want to visit a hospital again
And I thought you'd need to be really smart to be a doctor. But these people seem to be far from being smart. Especially falsifying medical records. How dumb can you be to do something like this? This is not some innocent "Fake a school mark" thing. This can put people's life at risk. These are adults working in one of the most serious environments possible and decide to just fuck around with the patients health.
It was an accident.
Accidentally left the recorder on, too? Could be.. But better this way, because people ought to know that medical professionals can also be malevolent pieces of shit.
If you're not going to be professional and take this job seriously then someone with a better attitude can have your job. I can understand shit talking patients outside of work but right there while on the job? That's not right
Why the hell were those surgeons so bitter? She's a mil doc, that explains a lot too. Bad doctors are attracted to the military like a fly is to a pile of shit.
I cannot fathom what a medically-ill man can do that warrants such senseless hostility.
Holy christ all of those doctors/assistants are fucksticks, hope they felt extra retarded when they found out they got caught.
$500,000 is ridiculously high for some insults. I mean come on, it's words, it's not like they harmed or botched the operation. This sets a very bad precedent.
$500,000 is ridiculously high for some insults. I mean come on, it's words, it's not like they harmed or botched the operation. This sets a very bad precedent.
They conspired to falsely diagnose him with hemorrhoids so he would "go away". They made comments about how he went to a college that at was at one point an all-girls school, so they made fun of him because he "must be gay". They're a bunch of assholes that should be really happy they even still have their jobs.
You'd expect this behavior from students who didn't know any better, but this is very unprofessional coming from doctors at this level. This is a high stress job, sure. A lot of people do and have taken refuge in gallows humor. But judging by what the articles say nothing excuses them from behaving the way they did, even going so far as falsifying a diagnosis for fun. This profession demands a certain attitude and a certain standard of behavior and morality. If I were me, I'd not be satisfied with the damages, I'd be calling for these people to be hauled up in front of an ethics committee and given a while to cool off to understand the unprofessionalism of their actions. Though with how much it's blown up, it's no doubt they've already ended up in front of one.
Accidental how, "Siri, record"?

My mom, whose a nurse, was laughing as she read the article. I asked her why. "Even at our hospital, the surgeons and staff talk way to much in the ER. This will scare them to shut up and operate instead of chit chat during operations."
Wonder what he did to make the doctors so pissed off
I understand the morbid humor that medical professionals adopt after dealing with sick and dying people all the time, but falsely diagnosing and conspiring to mislead a patient for personal reasons is just wrong. Also, "Northern Virginia Syndrome" heh, classy.
Wonder what he did to make the doctors so pissed off
it started with him being queasy at the needle being placed into his arm, and went downhill from there but that was basically all he did, after that it was all the doctors being giant cunts
it started with him being queasy at the needle being placed into his arm, and went downhill from there but that was basically all he did, after that it was all the doctors being giant cunts
Wtf they should be used to accommodating patients like that what a bunch of dicks
I can imagine the patient being a complete prick to the personell, and then record the conversations afterwards for these kind of purposes. However it was an accident most likely
