Hundreds of Sunni Muslim families are fleeing their homes in Syria's coastal town of Banias, fearing further sectarian violence after fighters loyal to President Bashar al-Assad killed dozens of people overnight, according to opposition activists.
The activists on Saturday said the killings in the Ras al-Nabaa district of Banias took place two days after state forces and pro-Assad militias massacred at least 50 Sunnis in the nearby village of Baida.
"I estimate that hundreds of families left and headed for nearby towns like Jableh and Tartous," Rami Abdelrahman, head of the British-based Syrian Observatory, said.

Hundreds of Syrians have fled coastal areas where activists accuse government forces of carrying out massacres in a campaign of sectarian cleansing.
Footage of mutilated and burnt bodies, allegedly from the town of Baniyas, have been posted online.
Activists said 77 people had died in Baniyas, a day after 72 were killed at the nearby village of al-Bayda.
The government said it had fought back "terrorist groups" and restored peace and security to the area.
Remember, according to resident Russophiles rebels are the only secretarian ones and we love dictatorships etc. This is really fucking sad that they would massacre a religious group who probably has little association with the rebels.
