It's not like the US or Russia got to space quickly either, errors will happen, especially considering it's NK we're talking about here.

with their tech they probably won't be able to take down that many people and it'd be a reason for the rest of the world to move in and do something about that fucking country

North Korea did get a satellite into orbit without anyone's help, I'm sure that counts as beating them.

Their original space program had a problem with the rockets exploding. They scrapped that program a year or two ago because they could not admit to the failure of their only two launches.
