The UK will be a more "liberal nation" in five years time if the government fulfils its aims, Nick Clegg has said. In a speech in London, the deputy prime minister said a "truly reforming" Parliament could change politics and the economy for the better by 2015. His Conservative coalition partners shared his "reforming zeal", he argued. The Lib Dem leader has come under fire for the coalition's spending cuts programme, which some of his own MPs fear will hit the poorest hardest. On Friday, it was reported that the government may accelerate Labour plans to raise the age at which people are entitled to a free bus pass from 60 to 65. Mr Clegg and his Lib Dem colleagues in government have come under pressure over the coalition's decision to raise VAT and cut new school buildings schemes as it seeks to reduce the deficit. 'Challenging times' The deputy prime minister has admitted the decisions - which come ahead of an anticipated 25% average cut in department budgets next year - are difficult but necessary to sort out the public finances and enable long-term investment in public services. "This Parliament will be challenging one," Mr Clegg told the think tank Demos.
More here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-10659606
I thought Britain was already kinda liberal.
Britain's pretty damn right-wing when you look at their policies. They're the most American country in western Europe.
Britain's pretty damn right-wing when you look at their policies. They're the most American country in Europe.
you'll find that the eastern bloc countries are more right wing than the UK russia especially
In Britain, we have police officers that cannot arrest you. Yeah, we're really liberal.
one of those aims better be the removal of the CCTV's aiming at non-public property and removal of the ban on Rave music
From what i've been seeing the UK is really restrictive on a lot of things. Hopefully this doesn't mean it'll be more so.
From what i've been seeing the UK is really restrictive on a lot of things. Hopefully this doesn't mean it'll be more so.
i forgot it was opposite day where liberal doesn't mean more free
In Britain, we have police officers that cannot arrest you.
you'll find that the eastern bloc countries are more right wing than the UK russia especially
I always forget about the eastern bloc. When I say Europe just assume I mean western Europe
I was at a house party once that was being broken up by Community Support Officers, when some people refused to leave they had to threaten us with getting a real police officer that could arrest us :v:.
Why exacly was it broken up? I'm sure there was a valid reason,
I hope lib-dems do a bit more, I haven't heard them do anything since they got into power.
Britain's pretty damn right-wing when you look at their policies. They're the most American country in Europe.
And yet, we're still nothing like America. Also, at OP - GOOD. Nick Clegg, you're our only hope. Kinda.

[editline]12:08PM[/editline]
Britain's pretty damn right-wing when you look at their policies. "Wilkins, get on the line to RTL, we're buying Five and claiming their stake in Freeview and TUTV. I think it's time I paid Cameron a follow-up."
This actually annoys me, because labels like "liberal" and "conservative" are not only openly to interpretation, but they can put people off of certain acts or political movements because HURR DURR ITS LIBERALL/CONSERVATIV AND I DUN LIEK LIBERALLS/CONSERVATIVS. Don't focus on making the UK a more liberal country, Clegg. Focus on helping it to run properly. I think what'd make more sense is to find a nice middle ground between the left and right wing.
My arse we're liberal. Even Labour, supposedly left wing had conservative policies.
My arse we're liberal. Even Labour, supposedly left wing had conservative policies.
Chances are what'll happen is the government will try really hard to appear liberal and screw us over somewhere else. :eng101:
My arse we're liberal. Even Labour, supposedly left wing had conservative policies.
Which reminds me, though - is "you'll get the rights if you uphold the responsibilities" liberal?
Isn't Hezzy a community support officer lol
Isn't Hezzy a community support officer lol
nah I think he's a special constable
My arse we're liberal. Even Labour, supposedly left wing had conservative policies.
Labour was liberal in the 70s. They've been slowly heading towards authoritarian and right-wing tendencies though.
Labour was liberal in the 70s. They've been slowly heading towards authoritarian and right-wing tendencies though.
Labour was a socialist party up (a real one, not the American idea of socialism) until 1995 when it changed it's constitution to remove elements of socialism. Blair was basically a Thatcherite and continued many Thatcherite policies implemented by the previous conservative government which it had previously promised not to, and certainly wouldn't have done before Blair became leader.
I hope that the US moves more to the left by 2015 as well...
