Earth days could be shorter after Chilean earthquake
THE earthquake that has killed over 700 Chileans and displaced over two million more has now caused our days to be shorter.
The earthquake that struck Chile measured at an 8.8 magnitude and put the entire Pacific on tsunami alert.
But scientists say the shifting in the tectonic plates has also shifted the Earth's axis.
The Earth’s overall mass distribution has likely been altered which has made the length of a day 1.26 microseconds shorter, NASA scientists say.
"The axis about which the Earth's mass is balanced should have moved by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimetres or 3 inche)]," NASA told Bloomberg.
“It’s what we call the ice-skater effect,” David Kerridge, head of Earth hazards and systems at the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh told Bloomberg.

“As the ice skater puts when she’s going around in a circle, and she pulls her arms in, she gets faster and faster. It’s the same idea with the Earth going around if you change the distribution of mass, the rotation rate changes.”
Dun Dun DUNNN.

that's barely anything

Fine let me get more.

I meant 1.25 microseconds is barely anything

Oh, But still i added a bit more info, But they still have to read the rest.

It means that atomic clocks and the such will have to be calibrated, I think.
Also could some explain to me, Yeah i am dumb. But how long is 1.26 MICROSECOND?
Also could some explain to me, Yeah i am dumb. But how long is 1.26 MICROSECOND?
1/1000000th of a second.
It means that atomic clocks and the such will have to be calibrated, I think.
We really are fucked then.
Goodbye World.
Honestly, Do scientists really spend all day seeing if the days are any shorter?
1/1000000th of a second.
I mean't in days.
It means that atomic clocks and the such will have to be calibrated, I think.
Atomic clocks are constant, The axial day may be a shorter period of time now, but that doesn't mean a period of 1 second is any shorter than it was a few weeks ago.
It may not seem like much but in time it would all add up and eventually put dates and seasons out of our natural sync.
Someone do the math for us.
I mean't in days.
Way too small to be of any useful number..
In hours, it's 3.5E-10, which is not far off the size of an atom nucleus in meters.
well done Chile!
fuck sake, trust you.
Basically, The Earth will lose a Day in about 1 or 2 million years. And Probably even more than that.
Assuming 18 quakes a year that can shorten the Earth's day by 1 microsecond gives you a shortening of 5 hours over the span of a billion years.
I can move the earth more by farting.

Yup.

Did you really do that math for that? If so, you sir are awesome.
I mean't in days.
Why would you want to know how long 1.26 microseconds is in days?
Did you really do that math for that? If so, you sir are awesome.
It's not hard.

Wait 10-4 = 10 to 4 years? D:
Wait 10-4 = 10 to 4 years? D:
Scientific notation.
It's the same as saying 5.7E-4
If you haven't come across it yet, you will if you do any kind of science involving big/small numbers.
Basically it's easier to write 5.7E-4 instead of 0.00057

...I take it you don't know exponentiation
I can move the earth more by farting.
No. That's against the law of constant impulse.
Also could some explain to me, Yeah i am dumb. But how long is 1.26 MICROSECOND?
No, not very.

isn't 1/1.000.000 nano?

I googled it, micro is 1/1.000.000
