A U.K. student feminism conference is asking attendees to refrain from clapping and use “jazz hands” instead so as to not trigger anxiety in others.
The National Union of Students (NUS) Women’s Campaign announced the clapping “ban” at the West Midlands conference on Twitter Tuesday, shortly after receiving a request from the Oxford University Women’s Campaign.
“@nuswomcam please can we ask people to stop clapping but do feminist jazz hands? it’s triggering some peoples’ anxiety. thank you!” Oxford representatives wrote.
Within five minutes, NUS tweeted: “Some delegates are requesting that we move to jazz hands rather than clapping, as it’s triggering anxiety. Please be mindful! #nuswomen15.”
The tweets received a wave of criticism and mockery by people who argued political correctness has run amok, Twitchy first reported.
Delegates told BBC’s Newsbeat that jazz hands are “a nice way to show solidarity.”
“Jazz hands are used throughout NUS in place of clapping as a way to show appreciation of someone’s point without interrupting or causing disturbance, as it can create anxiety,” said Nona Buckley-Irvine, general secretary at the London School of Economics Students’ Union. “I’m relatively new to this and it did feel odd at first, but once you’ve used jazz hands a couple of times it becomes a genuinely nice way to show solidarity with a point and it does add to creating a more inclusive atmosphere.”
I am at a loss for words for the sheer stupidity of this.
Anxiety from clapping is this what we do now? :suicide:
But what if Jazz hands triggers someone?
As someone who has anxiety, how the hell does clapping trigger it?
Everyone in the crowd needs to clap as loudly as they can in protest.
if i walked in to a room full of people throwing up the jazz hands i'd have some form of anxiety attack
this article just triggered me

Maybe golf clapping would be more acceptable instead of jazz hands.
I could understand if this was a convention for people who have been subjugated to physical violence or PTSD from war since loud noises can trigger some people.
But come the fuck on clapping isn't even about feminism, it's just making their movement look more and more disconnected from society.
Not only did they say 'jazz hands' but they fucking applied the adjective 'femnist' to it.
These people are pussies. No pun intended either.
What a great find! Surely this deserves applause!

it's incredibly frustrating to watch this kind of stuff get passed around tumblr all the time.
it just makes them look immature, like, they're not triggers. people don't shut down because someone clapped.
this kind of thing just overshadows people who have genuine triggers, people who have PTSD or similar and literally cannot function and it just makes it harder for them to get help
friendly reminder that people here WILL defend this - I don't know how, but someone will find a way
there'll be the usual suspects like starlight456 who dumb every post, but thats as much as I can predict
What gets me most is that of all gestures you could use, why jazz hands?
Why not a thumbs up?

What
Personally I'm upset that they used the word Jazz, that's cultural appropriation. By attaching the word 'Jazz' to their actions they are falsely assuming an aspect of a culture that is not theirs to use. African American culture is strictly off limits for the general public.~
For our next guest, we request that the audience all wear blindfolds as watching directly at the speaker may trigger anxiety attacks.
What
It's like Jazz hands but without the misogyny.
How about you are not going to attend to event, if you are triggered by very basic gesture that is common wiht such events.
I think there must be somekind of universal world etiquete that draws the line between "your demands from society can be respected" and "man a fuck up you awkward pussy", cause people novadays exploiting this for political agenda without taking a break.
“Whooping is fun for some, but can be super inaccessible for others, so please try not to whoop! Jazz hands work just as well #nuswomen15,” they said.
like this is totes problematic 4 me, cuz jazz hands are ableist imho, it's super toxic to assume everyone has hands to jazz with, so pls refrain from this behavior. tia #checkem2015
It's like that Futurama episode where an ecologist activist tells people not to clap because it kills micro-organisms and asks them to thumbs up instead.
Like, I understand what's going on here and it's very kind but I laughed anyway, fucking feminist jazz hands that's great
Soon these extreme feminists are gonna get triggered by the very prescence of people...
Like seriously? Triggered by clapping? They might as well be triggered by footsteps or breathing.
If someone has anxiety they genuinely wouldn't feel comfortable being in a room with a big group to begin with, walking down a crowded corridor is hard enough most times.

i can see what they're trying to do, but fuck it's awkward when they try to turn a movement advocating women's rights into a magic swiss army knife that can somehow play the role of every social movement on the planet
Okay look, seriously, if clapping is someones trigger, maybe they really should just sack up.

I'll defend it, because it's their conference and they can make whatever requests they want for their voluntarily attendees, they're not forcing it on anyone else, so who cares? It's not like they're demanding that society cease clapping immediately to cater to some minority of people that has PTSD-related anxiety from the sound of clapping, they're just making event policies that specifically cater to their attendees. If they want to ban speaking above a whisper because talking is triggering or something, good for them, I'm not going to their conference, I could not possibly care less.
At my college we regularly did the jazz hands instead of clapping because we had a large population of deaf students and jazz hands is the deaf substitute for clapping. It's just a gesture to express reaction, it's readily interchangeable. So what?
Of course it's in the UK. I bet they don't even leave tips!

No fingers used. Fingers are phallic.
