No doubt all the Spotify users will already know this, but Spotify recently announced they are further limiting the use of Spotify for the Free/Open users.
Here’s how the changes will work: New Spotify users will be able to enjoy our unrivalled free service as it is today for the first 6 months. As of May 1st, any user who signed up to the free service on or before November 1st 2010 will be able to play each track for free up to a total of 5 times. Users who signed up after the beginning of November will see these changes applied 6 months after the time they set up their Spotify account. Additionally, total listening time for free users will be limited to 10 hours per month after the first 6 months. That’s equivalent to around 200 tracks or 20 albums.
https://www.spotify.com/se/blog/archives/2011/04/14/upcoming-changes-to-spotify-free-open/ That's fair enough, in my opinion. They are a company who need to make money and it's not as if they are ripping anyone off, however what impact will this have on piracy? I personally believe the strict limitations will drive the vast majority to piracy/use of services such as Grooveshark or Youtube for music. Of course, some will pay for the service but most will inevitably decide it's easier and cheaper to pirate. Also that way they are able to have actual copies of the music that can be used on an iPod for example, rather than rely on a constant internet connection (Though I'm pretty sure the Spotify premium allows for 'offline mode' too, could someone confirm how well that works for music on your phone and such?) Also does anyone know if the Beta users like me will have the same limitations?
This only applies to Open accounts, they won't change how Spotify Free works.
New Spotify users will be able to enjoy our unrivalled free service as it is today for the first 6 months. As of May 1st, any user who signed up to the free service on or before November 1st 2010 will be able to play each track for free up to a total of 5 times. Idk I have no idea about spotify but that seems like free to me
Well shit.

Premium overlord represent! I must say, 5 plays per track will throw a lot of people off the free service. The adverts and low bitrate was enough to warrant the £10 a month for Premium, pretty much the cost of a new album. Sharing and finding new music is so much easier, since using it the amount of music I like has increased massively.
I think 100 kr (whatever that is in your inferior currencies) is way to expensive, I'm not going to subscribe.
I'm going to Grooveshark instead when this is put into effect.
I have never subscribed for Spotify, and I'm not going to start now. There are plenty of alternatives; last.fm, Grooveshark, hell, Youtube with playlists works. I think Spotify is going to lose many of the people who didn't pay, but then, to Spotify, those people don't matter. It's been interesting watching them turn from a small company that actually cared for its users into a large, money grabbing business similar to so many others.
I think 100 kr (whatever that is in your inferior currencies) is way to expensive, I'm not going to subscribe.
Since 100kr is about £11, you're paying about 9kr more of your "superior" currency :smug:
It's been interesting watching them turn from a small company that actually cared for its users into a large, money grabbing business similar to so many others.
really? They've always been here to make money, if you thought they cared about you you're a moron. I've always wondered how they're making a profit if people can stream unlimited music - turns out they're probably not. Good on them for surviving, it's only £5 a month for spotify unlimited ffs.

It's probably cheaper in the long run to buy music yourself
Or you could just get Spotify Unlimited for 49sek (Swedish kr) per month (~5.5€)
I'm going to Grooveshark instead when this is put into effect.
Just a FYI, grooveshark is not legal. They don't own any rights to the music you can find on it. No, you will not get in trouble for using it. Just saying. Fuck Spotify. I'm getting WiMP.
Paying for a Premium account, because I'm listening to spotify with my phone.
Well I have Premium anyway, cuz of iPhone app
Grooveshark it is then.

would get unlimited if i had a job
To me, Grooveshark is better than Spotify because there is more "unknown" music, and not only the mainstream music. (Not implying that mainstream music is bad).
To me, Grooveshark is better than Spotify because there is more "unknown" music, and not only the mainstream music. (Not implying that mainstream music is bad).
Grooveshark is clunky and has lower quality music, usually Youtube rips.
Grooveshark is clunky and has lower quality music, usually Youtube rips.
This, I can't stand listening to shitty quality music. Thats why I never use youtube for just that purpose either. Also, alot of songs seem to be missing a few seconds in the end in Grooveshark, which puts me off even more.
I'm going to have to find another free ad-powered service to move to I think. I was considering paying £5 a month for the unlimited service, but I don't want to feel forced to pay for it in order to enjoy my music.

Well they can say bye to their userbase.
Just get Premium/Unlimited. How poor are you? I suspect it has more than Grooveshark even.
What the fuck? I can listen to a song five times and then I can't listen to it ever again? Bogus. And just a few days ago I thought that Spotify is the best thing ever. Good things come and go I suppose. Been a free member for years upon years. You'd think they would at least let us who have been there from the start to keep our free accounts.
If that is the case then i am not going to use spotify for much longer.
If that is the case then i am not going to use spotify for much longer.
Oh noes, how will Spotify survive without your support consisting of nothing!?
