Overview
The Simpsons is an American animated television series created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series is a satirical parody of a working-class American lifestyle epitomized by its eponymous family, which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The show is set in the fictional city of Springfield, and lampoons American culture, society, television and many aspects of the human condition.
The family was conceived by Groening shortly before a pitch for a series of animated shorts with the producer James L. Brooks. Groening created a dysfunctional family and named the characters after members of his own family, substituting Bart for his own name. The shorts became a part of The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. After a three-season run, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime time show and was an early hit for Fox, becoming the first Fox series to land in the Top 30 ratings in a season (1989–1990).
Since its debut on December 17, 1989 the show has broadcast 464 episodes and the twenty-first season finished airing on May 23, 2010. The Simpsons Movie, a feature-length film, was released in theaters worldwide on July 26 and July 27, 2007, and grossed US$527 million worldwide.
The Simpsons has won dozens of awards since it debuted as a series, including 27 Primetime Emmy Awards, 27 Annie Awards and a Peabody Award. Time magazine's December 31, 1999 issue named it the 20th century's best television series, and on January 14, 2000 the Simpson family was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated program, and in 2009 it surpassed Gunsmoke as the longest running American primetime entertainment series. Homer's exclamatory catchphrase "D'oh!" has been adopted into the English lexicon, while The Simpsons has influenced many adult-oriented animated sitcoms.
Origins
Groening conceived of the idea for the Simpsons in the lobby of James L. Brooks's office. Brooks had asked Groening to pitch an idea for a series of animated shorts, which Groening initially intended to present as his Life in Hell series. However, when Groening realized that animating Life in Hell would require the rescinding of publication rights for his life's work, he chose another approach and formulated his version of a dysfunctional family. He named the characters after his own family members, substituting "Bart" for his own name, adapting an anagram of the word "brat".
The Simpson family as they first appeared in The Tracey Ullman Show.
The Simpson family first appeared as shorts in The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. Groening submitted only basic sketches to the animators and assumed that the figures would be cleaned up in production. However, the animators merely re-traced his drawings, which led to the crude appearance of the characters in the initial short episodes. One of the earliest jobs of the Klasky Csupo company was creating animated sequences for The Tracey Ullman Show which led to the start of The Simpsons. The animation was produced domestically at Klasky Csupo, with Wesley Archer, David Silverman, and Bill Kopp being animators for the first season. Georgie Peluse was the colorist and the person who decided to make the characters yellow.
In 1989, a team of production companies adapted The Simpsons into a half-hour series for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The team included what is now the Klasky Csupo animation house. Jim Brooks negotiated a provision in the contract with the Fox network that prevented Fox from interfering with the show's content. Groening said his goal in creating the show was to offer the audience an alternative to what he called "the mainstream trash" that they were watching. The half-hour series premiered on December 17, 1989 with "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire", a Christmas special. "Some Enchanted Evening" was the first full-length episode produced, but it did not broadcast until May 1990, as the last episode of the first season, because of animation problems. In 1992, Tracey Ullman filed a lawsuit against Fox, claiming that her show was the source of the series' success. The suit said she should receive a share of the profits of The Simpsons—a claim rejected by the courts.
Sorry I couldn't find two separate videos, amazingly an unedited version of the intros that isn't recorded off a camera from a tv is rare.

I don't think the OP needs to be any longer, but if it needs to be I'll do so.
its weird when the earlier episodes are on the voice acting and drawing is so different
I was a simpsons fan since ... well ... for as long as I can remember. It hurts to say that the show is quite terrible now. The 'hey-days' of the simpsons ended after 1999. The earlier episodes were very witty and had great jokes. When I watch the newer eps it's like I'm staring at brick wall. I don't laugh, smile, frown ... just no emotion, I just stare at the screen. One of the reasons I spend more time on the computer than in front of the tv now.
I have never heard of this show before, ever.

I couldn't agree more :v:
Yeah a part of me doesn't want it to end, but another part says it's probably for the best.

really? what country are you in? almost everyone has heard of it in england.
I was poking fun at the lengths in which the OP tried to describe the show. I guarantee that 98% of this forum has heard of / knows what the Simpsons are.

oh okay wasn't very funny.
I was laughing ever since you replied to that post. In fact it's hard to type when I'm laughing so hysterically. But let's not derail this thread, I think I saw a new episode of the Simpsons the other day, it wasn't very funny and the creators are making episodes more and more elaborate. Which isn't necessarily a good thing.
So, what's everyone's least favorite episode?
Mine is "That 90s Show" for MANY reasons. :frog:
i wasnt laughing thats the problem with your joke, anywayyy. what happened in the episode i haven't seen the simpsons in a few months.

Every episode after the 10th season lol. Not quite sure since as soon as I turn on the tv to watch the simpsons, if it's one of the newer eps I simply change the channel or sit back down on the computer. I seriously dont think I've seen much of the last 8 seasons.

I can sort of agree, the old episodes were a lot better. Damn writers and their inconsistent continuity.
lol yeah. But I'll give em credit for keeping the stories original. I've seen a few repetitive episodes but most episodes have plots that have never been done before. But since creativness and comedy aren't the same thing, though it is creative, it's not funny. I guess it's hard to keep stuff fresh after 21 years.
For fav episode, too much to choose, so many episodes gave me laughs.
Can anyone remember their fav episode? lol
hell no theirs too many to even try thinking, i do like the art in the newer episodes though. the old Simpson episodes colours were very washed out.
I loved the Simpsons, and I still do. It may not be as funny as it used to be, but it's still one of the best cartoons out there.
But it isn't Matt Groenings best work :zoid:
My favourite episode...
Either The Monorail episode, The Springfield files or Bart vs Australia.
I'm not a fan of the Halloween specials, one where Homer gets a hair implant and murders Moe and Apu really scared me as a child. Really scared.

Day of the Dolphin scared me when I was a kid.
I loved The Simpsons and i still love them.

The old Simpsons kick. New ones rarely do.
Good show to watch when you're bored or just want to chill. Never had a problem with how it changed.
I hate what they've done with sideshow bob.
"Hello. My name is Mr. Burns. I believe you have a letter for me."
"Okay Mr. Burns. What's your first name?"
"... I don't know."
That joke all the way back from season 2 never fails to amuse me. The Shining spoof was my favourite one though.
I love the Itchy & Scratchy land episode, mainly for the Euro Itchy & Scratchy land thing at the end.
"My children need wine!"
The Simpsons had some pretty good video games and arcade games.
I love the Simpsons, some say it's quality is lower now, but IMO, they are still funny.
"Monorail! Monorail! Monoraaaaillll!"
"Mono-Doh!"
For me, The Simpsons have been completely overshadowed by Family Guy and Futurama. Though I do still watch it. And thoroughly enjoy it.
