On Tuesday October 23 in Chicago, four people running for president of the United States will debate each other, and none of them are Barack Obama or Mitt Romney. Larry King will host the debate between Jill Stein of the Green Party, Virgil Goode of the Constitution Party, Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party, and Rocky Anderson of the Justice Party. It will be streamed online by Ora TV for free, among other places. The debate is a unique way to see a true clash of beliefs, as well as a chance to hear some policies that would never be mentioned in the political mainstream. Of course, if any of these ideas end up gaining traction, it may not be long before they are incorporated into the political mainstream. After mounting frustration at not getting a chance to be a part of the debates between the Republican and Democratic candidates and one day after the Green Party candidates were arrested trying to enter a Republican and Democratic debate it is announced that the third party candidates will have a debate of their own. The debate will cover a wide variety of issue foreign and domestic, giving the candidates a chance to air their extremely disparate views. Is it just a stream, not televised?
Would love to see Stewart Alexander in this.
Is it just a stream, not televised?
Correct. Steamed for free on Ora.tv and on other sites, including Al Jazeera English, who may broadcast it if you get their cable station, if they have one. I know RT does, and will likely broadcast it, or at least stream it. [editline]19th October 2012[/editline]
Would love to see Stewart Alexander in this.
Also this.
the communist party is too lazy to field it's own candidate, they're just backing Obama.
Finally a real debate!
I think I might actually watch this one, I love Jill Stein. To think I used to laugh at people who voted Green, wow, where does the time go?
to be honest, third parties seem to make a lot more sense than republicans or democrats.
to be honest, third parties seem to make a lot more sense than republicans or democrats.
But the majority of the voters identify themselves as either of those and will vote for that candidate blindly.
the communist party is too lazy to field it's own candidate, they're just backing Obama.
there are other far left marxist/communist groups, such as the party for socialism and liberation that could be in this debate
Third party candidates should be in all the debates along the two big parties. Why make it only rep vs dem? Include the libertarians and the Green Party
No Ron Paul?
Third party candidates should be in all the debates along the two big parties. Why make it only rep vs dem? Include the libertarians and the Green Party
Because anyone that knows anything about how our political system works knows that voting for anything but republicans or democrats in a presidential election is, unfortunately, throwing away your vote.
Because anyone that knows anything about how our political system works knows that voting for anything but republicans or democrats in a presidential election is, unfortunately, throwing away your vote.
Surely including third parties in the debates would at least give them a higher chance of catching the majority vote? Steps should be taken to try and widen the horizons more regardless of how effective said steps may be; I just want them to acknowledge that there are issues with the system and attempt to remedy them, rather than just letting two parties get all the attention.
No Ron Paul?
He's in the GOP. If you want Ron Paul-esque you'd obviously be looking towards Gary Johnson
Never heard of the Justice Party before but they seem pretty awesome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice_Party_(United_States)
Who the fuck is Virgil Goode
Surely including third parties in the debates would at least give them a higher chance of catching the majority vote? Look up "The Alternate Vote" on YouTube. The first result should explain this to you.
No. This could cause a candidate to win with less than 50% of the vote. Look up "The Alternate Vote" on YouTube. The first result should explain this to you.
Yeah, except that no one actually votes for these candidates lol
No. This could cause a candidate to win with less than 50% of the vote.
Just like what happened with Bush.
If no candidate gets more than 50% of the electoral vote, the House of Representatives decides who becomes President and the Senate decides the VP Which is kind of fucked tbh
If no candidate gets more than 50% of the electoral vote, the House of Representatives decides who becomes President and the Senate decides the VP Which is kind of fucked tbh
CGP grey explains this really well
This is really wonderful. While my political views most closely mirror the LP, I have a lot of respect for these other parties, and am really interested in hearing them have a real debate.
the communist party is too lazy to field it's own candidate, they're just backing Obama.
That's because since Webb became chairman, CPUSA has been a revisionist party more than anything. Kind of disappointing to see a hardline Marxist-Leninist party turn into a pansy Social Democrat group praising the Democrats at every opportunity.
Apparently Jill Stein lives in my town.
Jill Stein is cool.
I'm excited to watch, if the Johnson vs Stein debate was any indicator of how this will go down, It's going to be much better than our presidential debates so far
I'm going to vote for Gary Johnson in November. While I may not agree with the political positions of some of the other third parties, like the Green Party, I have a lot of respect for them.
imagine how awesome it would be if Stein and Johnson were the mainstream candidates.
imagine how awesome it would be if Stein and Johnson were the mainstream candidates.
We would have a lot less attacks on a candidates personal actions
