The University of Vermont has temporarily suspended the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon after one their members sent out a survey asking his brothers who they would like to rape.
Sigma Phi Epsilon — or SigEp — was already on probation for alcohol abuses, but this latest incident prompted university authorities to contact the national fraternity and the police.
While the survey began with ordinary questions like major and favorite memories, the final question shocked students and members of the UVM administration.
“If I could rape someone, who would it be?” the survey asked.
According to student blogs, the survey was leaked when one SigEp brother mistakenly emailed it to a teaching assistant. One blog alleged that same student had been accused of rape, WCAX reported.
Vice president for student and campus life Thomas J. Gustafson told The Burlington Free Press that the matter had been forwarded to police to determine if a crime was committed.
“We don’t know what we’ve got right now; we don’t know which individual or individuals are involved,” Gustafson explained.
The national fraternity released an advisory Tuesday saying they were aware of “a document that included several inappropriate questions.”
“The Fraternity has instructed the chapter to cease all operations, pending further investigation,” the statement said. “Any behavior that demeans women is not tolerated by the Fraternity.”
About 45 SigEp brothers will be allowed to remain in the fraternity house during the investigation, but official meetings and events must be canceled.
“The men can continue to live there,” associate vice president for student and campus life Annie Stevens explained to the Free Press. “We will work very hard and diligently on what has happened.”
An online petition calling for UVM to disband Sigma Phi Epsilon had over 2,000 signatures by Wednesday afternoon.
“This egregious expression of rape culture is only the most recent example of systemic sexism at UVM,” the petition charged. “The past year alone has witnessed rape, multiple sexual assaults, and anti-abortion chalking in public spaces. While the university administration has laid off long-time Women’s and Gender Studies faculty and supported sexist institutions like Sigma Phi Epsilon, it has refused to take concerted action to combat sexism and rape culture.”
“An institution that discusses who it wants to rape has no place at UVM or in the Burlington community,” it concluded.
The national fraternity revoked the UVM chapter’s charter for at least three years in 1993 after potential new members were asked to tell racist jokes and explain what they would do with a stripper they had seen the night before.
Students have been asked to contact UVM Police Services at 802-656-3473 if they have any information about the survey.

Looks like they're going to be on
double secret probation
Arrest him for a thought crime.
How do you ACCIDENTALLY send that to your TA??

Although one of my brothers did send a incriminating picture of me with pledges to my dad ... that was a bad day.
It's stupid but to be honest, I don't see how they're breaking any laws.
This is one of the rare times Vermont will ever be mentioned on Facepunch. This is hilarious though, can't wait to spread the word around my school.

Id put on the name of the guy handing out the leaflets just to see the look in his face. :v:
Yet another reason not to join a frat, as if the alcohol abuse and stupid 'bro's weren't enough.

There is what, 3.05·10^8 legal citizens in the US? Considering M/F ratio is nearly 50/50, you just divide the number by ten (1 per 2 citizens are female, 1 in 5 are assaulted).
That brings the number to 30.5 million women.
That number seems a bit excessive... I doubt the world is that bad...

If people in Vermont are anything like they are in Michigan, they intended to act on the results of that survey.
To all of you guys going to parties, this is the place for me to tell you to man the fuck up. If you see a girl being dragged into a bathroom or a guy fucking an unconscious girl, you beat them half to death because that's what rapists deserve.

Stupid? It's sickening. Who knows if one or more of the members have actually raped women in the past? It's really not funny that a fraternity is basically soliciting rape with their brothers.
Even if the survey isn't against the law, they can get in deep shit with the University or the national organization for their fraternity chapter, too. And deservedly so.

You've got lots to learn about the world.

I think the idea is to see who people fancy/are attracted to the most...
They're not suggesting raping anyone.
Hey my college is on Facepunch! One of the members of that frat lives down the hall...

Go rape him. See how he likes it.

wow they must really respect women
I think the idea is to see who people fancy/are attracted to the most...

Yeah well they're fucking idiots if they had the intention of doing that. They should've asked "who would you like to have sex with" simple as that. They want to rape somebody.
Looks like they're going to be on

triple
wow they must really respect women
I'm not agreeing with the idea that the rape thing was tasteful, because it kind of isn't, but as a half-defense, I gotta say that me and my friend makes jokes about "Would you fuck her?" and that doesn't imply I'm a manwhore if I say yes or something about my respect for women.
I believe if you circulate a petition with "Which politician do you want to go and torture" You'd have the FBI kicking down your door in under a day.
Yet this is fine because lol they're just kids. Sickening.

Then why did it say “If I could rape someone, who would it be?” Seems like they're suggesting rape just a little bit.

Even if that were the intention, there are a LOT of better ways to word it. A LOT.
you can rape men too
