• German email companies adopt new encryption to foil NSA
Communications sent between Germany’s two leading email providers will now be encrypted to provide better security against potential NSA surveillance. Experts say the move will do little to thwart well-equipped snoopers.
http://rt.com/news/german-email-encryption-nsa-312/
Deutsche Telekom and United Internet, which operate about two-thirds of Germany’s primary email accounts, said that from now on they will use SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) – a modern, industry-standard form of encryption that scrambles signals as they are sent through cables, which is the point at which the NSA often intercepts communication. The companies will also employ exclusively German servers and internal cables when sending messages between each other.

The agency is also able to crack the SSL code, with and without help from the email operator. However, it is much harder to do so without an operator-issued “key."
From what it looks like, there's no point then. nowadays the only secure way is 1024bit RSA, doing the key exchange by proxy in person at an agreed upon location, all details transmitted through morse code farts while passing on the street

You really can't "crack" properly performed SSL encryption.
Even if it doesn't stop the NSA, it does at least provide a smug middle finger to them.
confirmed for anti-American terrorism organization Germany allow us to extradite these criminals or we will take this as an act of war
You really can't "crack" properly performed SSL encryption.
Not now, but what about 10-15 years from now? I suggest you give this a good read.
When the FRA law went through in Sweden, our politicians started discussing whether to encrypt our internet traffic that goes through there, warn anyone of ours who's likely to have such traffic go through there, and/or bypass Sweden entirely. As far as I know, nothing came of it, which is annoying. It's nice to see Germans taking concrete action against this sort of infringement, even if it's not entirely bulletproof.
You really think so dont you ? That wasnt a joke by you
terrorist
Well, at least that is a start. When we first heard that the NSA is looking into our stuff, Merkel just said "Das Internet ist für uns alle Neuland", which'd mean "The internet is new to us all" and tried to talk down NSA's spionage. At least they understood that this is bullshit, now.
This is all bullshit, they are just doing something everyone else has been doing forever. It's just marketing.

Message encryption is fine and well, but we'll never be able to prevent agencies spying through message headers (which can't be encrypted because the network wouldn't be able to send it). So we'll still always have the potential scenario where you could be labeled a terrorist because you exchanged emails with the wrong people, even if the content of the emails can't be deciphered.
More or better encryption isn't the solution. But I guess you have to start somewhere. Next step is to drop windows and pick up linux.
You really think so dont you ? That wasnt a joke by you
yes; no.
