http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-19280898
US authorities must show evidence of internet piracy before Megaupload boss Kim Dotcom is extradited, a New Zealand court has ruled. Justice Helen Winklemann said that the defence team needed access to the evidence ahead of the extradition hearing, due in March. Mr Dotcom denies FBI claims he copied and distributed music, films and other content on a huge scale. Following his arrest in January the case has been beset by delays. 'Racketeering' In June a judge ruled that the warrant for the initial raid on his mansion and the way evidence was seized were illegal. Mr Dotcom has been accused of copyright theft, money laundering and racketeering fraud and faces a jail sentence of up to 20 years if convicted in the US. Prosecutors allege that pirated movies and other content shared through his site cost copyright holders more than $500m (£322m) in lost earnings, making it one of the biggest cases of its kind. The US Department of Justice alleges the firm made about $175m from advertising and membership fees as a result of its activities. Mr Dotcom's lawyers deny the charges saying the site simply offered an online storage service and that the majority of its traffic was "legitimate". Mr Dotcom remains on bail.
I wonder if they'll refuse to show the evidence again.
I wasn't actually expecting this. Lately everyone's been bending over for the US, it's nice to see someone stand up to it.
wasn't it already determined that everything they did was pretty much illegal (the american pigs) [editline]16th August 2012[/editline] oui oui tres bean
Absolutely boss. I honestly think Kim Dotcom is a cool guy. Thank fuck for that.
I expected NZ like most of the commonwealth to bend over to the US, nice to see someone finally holding their ground
oh fuck oh fuc k i have to email the FBI and demand evidence
Good. Someone needs to kick our government in the balls and tell them under no uncertain terms that they aren't the world police.
Thanknthe baby jesus that someone is actually having some sense in these copyright debates.
They will "find" some evidence.
This is where some random Swedish girls come out of nowhere and accuse him of rape.. [/wikileaks]
My moneys on that they'll just bribe the NZ government
My moneys on that they'll just bribe the NZ government
No shit, if they haven't already
New Zealand has very strict laws in the courts, there is little corruption in New Zealand due to the small population. Kim Dotcom is safe from the US in NZ for now.
This is where some random Swedish girls come out of nowhere and accuse him of rape.. [/wikileaks]
It wasn't rape charges though. It's a sex crime but the charge is sex without using a condom (saying you've got one on when you don't). Good job journalism. Both the wikileaks case and the megaupload one are prime examples of high profile American businessmen and government using their money to force or destroy anything that tarnishes or negatively effects them. The level of corruption is ridiculous.
My moneys on that they'll just bribe the NZ government
New Zealand is literally the worst country to try that with, they are the least corrupt country in the world
New Zealand is literally the worst country to try that with, they are the least corrupt country in the world
Woohoo, Scandinavia is up there with them Even though it's blatantly obvious that Sweden's government over here sucks Americas dick sometimes I have to say I was surprised all of Scandinavia was all the way up there though either way
Prosecutors allege that pirated movies and other content shared through his site cost copyright holders more than $500m (£322m) in lost earnings, making it one of the biggest cases of its kind.
When will these people learn there's a big different between theft of actual profits and a loss of theoretical profits. If megaupload hadn't existed they might not of ever made that money anyways. If the money didn't technically exist it's not thievery.
All the FBI has to do is copy all the right files they took from MU...oh...wait....
Prosecutors allege that pirated movies and other content shared through his site cost copyright holders more than $500m (£322m) in lost earnings, making it one of the biggest cases of its kind.
Ha ha, that's funny. Potential profit cannot be lost or "stolen", only gained. Idiots.
America, YOU SHALL NOT PASS!
I wish my country would stop spending money on stupid shit and get it together :(
There is no such thing as lost earnings..
There is no such thing as lost earnings..
Lost respect on the other hand...
Yay my country did something right for once :D
