Authorities have categorized the latest avalanche as a Class 3 to 3.5 slide. On the scale used by the Canadian Avalanche Association, a Class 3 slide can bury and destroy a car, damage a truck, destroy a small building or break trees. It was the third deadly avalanche in the province in just over a week.
On Friday, Kelly Reitenbach, 30, of Calgary, was killed in an avalanche while operating a snowmobile on Eagle Pass Mountain. A second snowmobiler, from Saskatchewan, sustained minor injuries.
Reitenbach, who was an official with the Western Hockey League, was remembered by his colleagues as being popular and well-liked.
“Kelly was highly respected amongst his peers both on and off the ice," WHL director of officiating Kevin Muench said in a written release.
"He was truly a leader and man with exceptional character, who lived every day with a smile on his face …. He will be missed by his many friends in the officiating community.”
