New species of bacteria found in Titanic 'rusticles'
H. titanicae bacterium (H Mann) The bacteria were grown from 19-year-old samples taken from the Titanic
A never-before-seen microbe has been found in the wreck of RMS Titanic.
The Halomonas titanicae bacterium was found in "rusticles", the porous and delicate icicle-like structures that form on rusting iron.
Various bacteria and fungi live within the delicate structures - first identified on the Titanic - actually feeding off the rusting metal.
The find is described in the journal International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.
Samples of rusticles from Titanic were gathered in 1991 by the Mir 2 robotic submersible.
Rusticles on Titanic (RMS Titanic Inc) The rusticles are delicate, poorly-understood homes for many bacteria
Researchers from Dalhousie University and the Ontario Science Centre in Canada and the University of Seville in Spain isolated the H. titanicae bacteria from those samples
It's been a good few weeks for bacteria, that's for sure.
damn, titanic, why you so cool
my god,

Cue conspiracy theorists.
The Titanic was actually a supertanker containing a super virus, it was sunk by the CIA to stop the virus spreading to the US.

"Scuttle a super freighter?"
a fucking iceberg
way to overcomplicate things jesus
There's a few thousand undiscovered bacteria in every spoon-full of earth.

There were no icebergs, it was thermite explosives :downs:
Some classy bacteria right there
oh god rusticles, that sounds painful

It's been a good few million years actually.
I hope this cheers the Titanic up, I've been hearing he's feeling pretty low.

i wonder if we'll ever find leonardo decaprio's body down there.
Stuff like this makes you wonder just how much humans will impact the world when we're gone. If the Titanic, a relic of the industrial era at it's peak, is allowing for this, imagine what will pop up when entire cities are, if ever, abandoned.

they will, they just HAVE TO GO DEEPER.
The natural process of decay is amazing. Nothing lasts forever, and as those hunks of iron sit at the bottom of the sea floor undergoing their inevitable transformation, new life emerges from the dying.

We don't even know a whole lot about those so-called "rusticals..."

Pretty elaborate pun right there.

I believe you mean she, good sir.
But until this bacteria has some sort of practical use, who gives a fuck? There are millions of undiscovered bacteria.

More like ZOOM
ENHANCE.
Defiantly some new bacteria there.
Who said pollution was bad? Nature will just make something to eat it!
This was actually already mentioned in Ghosts of The Abyss back in '03.
Use that to fight vehicle rust in countries where they use salt on the roads to fight ice.
