• Router Issues Again. :(

So I finally figured out how to forward ports on my router, set a dns adress, and set a static ip, three things I've been wanting to do. When I click apply, I can't connect to the internet. I tried using google's dns, open dns, and a few other providers. I tried using my default dns. I don't really mind that much about the dns but I really want a static ip. I followed this tutorial :http://corz.org/comms/hardware/router/static.ip.address.php And I use a linksys g cable gateway. Thanks in advance.
Your IP may have not of given you a static IP and it may be a Random IP each time, ( A Static IP stays as one IP with no change. A Random IP[It's called something else but I can't remember] wil always have a IP changed every restart.
OP can you connect to a website using its IP address, for example 74.125.67.100 (google.com)
Dynamic IP.
Thank you.
I know I have a dynamic ip, that's why I was trying to change it. How does that help me?
Do you want a static IP for just your computer, or for your entire network?
Either would be fine. Preferably for my computer. On second thought which would help me connect better to servers, etc?
Neither is really going to help you connect to servers outside your network any better. Something like this: Is what your settings on your computer should look like. To get to that screen open your network connections, right click on the connection you use (LAN or Wireless) and go to properties. Under that highlight Internet Protocol Version 4, and click into properties. Open your cmd prompt and type ipconfig, find where it says default gateway, and type that in under its namesake. the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0, and the IP address should be something on the higher side so that you don't end up with conflicts. For the DNS server I use google's, which are 8.8.8.8 for the primary, and 8.8.4.4 for the alternate.
I did that exactly. It didn't work though. That's what I'm saying. :frown: I think I did it right. I'll try it again with a higher ip number. [editline]11:40PM[/editline] I tried it again and it didn't work, however I got dns working.
Use a lower ip like 192.168.1.109 or something. I know I set my router to maybe accept only 8-9 ip addresses so people can't connect outside my house. Those damned network stealing nabours...
If your ISP doesn't supply you with a static IP address you can't force one.
Thanks, explains why I wasn't able to. Do you think that if I called them they could?
Thanks, explains why I wasn't able to. Do you think that if I called them they could?
Maybe, but it will probably be more expensive.
You don't need a static address WAN address. I doubt there's any advantage for you using one. However you can have your PC using a static address using the method screenshotted above. You will most likely want to use an internal static address for port forwarding. If you're really struggling PM me and I'll help you via remote access.
