Drag queens banned from Pride event 'because they may offend transgender people'
Drag queens have been banned from performing at a Pride event in case they offend transgender people.
Organisers of Free Pride Glasgow, which bills itself as an 'anti-commercialist' alternative to the Scottish city's main Pride event, have announced the controversial ban.
Despite the fact that drag queens have been closely associated with Pride celebrations for most of their history, they will not be allowed to appear at the event next month in case they cause offence.
A statement from the organisers said: “After much discussion, the trans and non binary caucus decided not to have drag acts perform at the event.
Am I the only one that finds this extremely ironic?
Fucking hell, it's even scary.
Honestly, there are a lot of drag queens who can be ridiculously transphobic and not just in "grasping at straws" ways either. A lot of them have a tendency to say some pretty wild stuff.
I mean either way, it's kind of a weird subject though. Hard to determine what's okay and what's not.
As a trans-woman, I can't stand drag queens.
For me, they are just mocking being trans, treating it like a game.
They aren't banning draq queens from attending, they are deciding not to have a pride sponsored drag show.
Please read your sources before you mislead people.
Drag Queens are the fucking worst, they make a mockery of trans people and put the entirety of the LGBT community in a bad light.
They act like stereotypical "fat black women" and just do it for fun and treat it like it's a fucking sideshow activity, and then who does the media look to first? These cunts.
Drag shows are fucking awful

Well they treat it like a show because that's exactly what it is, an act. It is supposed to be so over the top it is literally called 'performing drag'.
I have mixed feelings about this. Historically, drag performers have done a lot to put LGBT issues in the spotlight, and it's easy for me to say trans people shouldn't take then seriously. But I'm not trans so I don't have quite the same viewpoint.
As a gay man, do I enjoy drag shows? Not really. Are they a large subculture within the LGBT community? Absolutely.
fuck drag queens and fuck drag culture
as a trans person I wholeheartedly support this
that wait wait don't tell me episode with that drag queen on it was boring
RuPaul is disappointed.
banning things is ok when you agree with it!
drag queens are the lgbt equivalent of blackface

That's just like masculine gay men blaming campy/effeminate gay men for how homophobes treat them.
So is everyone forgetting that being a dragqueen is pretty damn old when you think about it?
In the 16th centure men had to play female roles because women weren't allowed to be in a play.
Just because some bigots associate dragqueens with transgenders, doesn't mean you should shoo them away.
What's next? Banning flamboyant gays because they give a stereotypical view of gay men? Don't forget to ban the lesbians that have short hair and wear flannel shirts.
Aren't dragqueens under the Transexual side of things?
Sounds like you are just being intolerant fucks tbh
drag queens are the lgbt equivalent of blackface
Drag Queens don't intend to mock LBGT people in most cases and often promote pride activities; i don't see how there is a parallel between that and blackface which was the deliberate mockery of black people by racists who sure as hell didn't support civil rights.
More signs that the LGBT movement is just devolving into infighting.

Irrelevant. That was done because of how cultural standards "forced" them to do it, or else have no female characters. Drag queens are intentionally dressing as ourageous characters.
And again, that's ridiculously irrelevant. Drag queens intentionally go out and perform like that, while flamboyant gays and butch lesbians go out like that because that's how they feel they are.

Nope. It's just a man portraying a womanly character. Could be a trans/cis man, but still.

Because they're both one demographic (men/white people) dressing up as another (women/black people) and going LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME. That's where they draw the parallel from. Intentions are a whole other ball game, though.
Funny. Last I remember, some feminists were bashing drag queens for mocking and characaturizing women.
I have a couple friends who perform drag. They've told me on occasion that they don't always like who they are and that being able to dress and become someone completely different for a night really helps. It lets them live a different life for a little while. All of them are gender non-binary. One of them in particular is always blowing up my news feed advocating transgender people. So I'm sure there are transphobic drag queens, but the ones I know are definitely not. I don't doubt that some transgender people may be offended by the hobby, but I think its important to understand why people do it before judging them.
No fun allowed.

Yeah this is how I feel too. Like drag shows are about gender performance more than anything, and for a night they are exaggerating an alternate gender identity. To me I don't see it as making a mockery of transgendered, it's just a celebration of sexuality. But I can see why they can be perceived as transphobic.
I thought drag queens just liked dressing up as women? How is that offensive?
I thought drag queens just liked dressing up as women? How is that offensive?
Because all they do is "Haha look at me isn't it bizarre that a man is dressing up like a woman?" and then they try to compare themselves to actual transgendered people.
Drag Queens are fucking pathetic
I knew a guy that dressed up in drag, who had two completely different personas.
His drag persona was just him, but a chick. He didn't even really make a show out of it. It was just something he did.

This.

Aaaand this.
I guess it could be chalked up to a difference in generations. A lot of kids nowadays don't know how hard it really used to be. There was no exposure in the mainstream media other than attack pieces and mocking. Drag is a way of bucking gender norms and saying that it doesn't matter how flamboyant I am because it's my life and I'll live how I like. It's also just fun to dress up sheesh. Get mad or something. This is beyond ridiculous.

this sounds exactly like the kind of generalization and mockery that bigots apply towards LGBT

So farmers aren't real either because they did it in the beginning out of neccesity? The origins don't matter, it is an old principle and found in many cultures.
Being a drag queen is as much of a selfexpression as looking flamboyant or butch. Since you seem to hate drag queens so much, I doubt you know a lot about them.
The world doesn't revolve around the easily offended. You should consider that not everyone is out to give you a bad image. My girlfriend happens to be a transgender as well, and she finds this as ridiculous as me (Yeah, I drew the token black card).
You are huffing and puffing at an act that is supposed to entertain. Do you go to music concerts and complain afterwards because the lightshow was way too ''LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME''?
Funny, last I remember some feminists were screaming about anything lately.
Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought Drag Queens did the whole shebang as a way to express themselves and celebrate femininity.
Like I'm not going to pretend I'm not ignorant of Drag culture (because I know almost nothing about it), but to compare it to blackface seems to be ... overreacting a little?

Where? From what I see it's mostly trans people just getting offended while drag queens are having fun.
And even if they compare themselves, so what? Why aren't they allowed to? I mean, we've been fighting for free expression the past 10 years and now trans people are saying others can't do what they want because they're offended by it?
