The Israeli government and Jewish organizations had been urging Facebook to delete the page, which went up several weeks ago and had attracted more than 350,000 followers before it was removed. As ZD Net reported Monday, the social network giant initially refused. The administrators of "Third Palestinian Intifada" initially removed comments that promoted violence, but they later joined the calls for violence, Facebook spokeswoman Debbie Frost said in an e-mail to Bloomberg. "We continue to believe that people on Facebook should be able to express their opinions, and we don't typically take down content that speaks out against countries, religions, political entities or ideas," Frost said. "However, we monitor pages that are reported to us and when they degrade to direct calls for violence or expressions of hate -- as occurred in this case -- we have and will continue to take them down." Last week, Israeli Cabinet Minister Yuli Edelstein sent a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg asking that the page be taken down because of comments calling for the killing of Jews and for "liberating" Jerusalem through violence, the New York Times notes. Edelstein told Bloomberg that the group had opened a similar Facebook page that soon attracted 700 supporters earlier today. A blogger at Palestine Note explains why he followed the page, why he supports another "intifada," and why Facebook needs to tweak its one-like-fits-all settings:
When the "Third Palestinian Intifada" page went up on Facebook several months ago, I hit the "Like" key to join it and read the postings.

I am in favor of a 3rd Intifada, but only one that is non-violent, because I believe the Israelis will not make peace or agree to concessions on land to permit the establishment of a sovereign Palestine State.

I did "Like" the page because unfortunately, Facebook doesn't give you other options instead of "Like," such as "Interested," or "Curious" or even "I don't agree but I want to know what's going on."

The page drew hundreds of thousands of online supporters on Facebook who are Palestinians, Arab, Muslim and pro-Arab. But the Facebook battle is much like the real life battle we see all the time in the Middle East. It's easy for people to rally around something negative, or that is painted as being negative. It is difficult to rally around something positive.
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2011/03/facebook-deletes-palestinian-intifada-page-for-threats-of-violence/1 [/release] I thought people were kidding when they use facebook for everything.
shit just got israel
Is that a severed head in the picture? wtf
snip
woah severed head
snip I'm fucking dumb
Why is it when I see the words "Israel" or "Jewish Organization" in an article about Palestinian resistance movements, everything starts to turn red and I get filled with rage?
Is that a severed head in the picture? wtf
no it's just someone sleeping
Some big irl trolls right here
Amazing double standards there. Making a Facebook page to organize a mass protest in any Middle Eastern nation is fine. But when people decide to make one about Israel, due to their disregard of human rights and intenational law, Israel and many other Jewish organizations demand it's removal, to which Facebook complies to.

It does look pretty violent. [editline]29th March 2011[/editline] what with the severed heads and all.
Isn't Zuckerberg Jewish?
It does look pretty violent. [editline]29th March 2011[/editline] what with the severed heads and all.
Those are Palestinian heads.
I agree with taking down the page. As the blogger said, violent threats (from either side) won't get anyone anywhere.

No siree! [editline]30th March 2011[/editline]
Amazing double standards there. Making a Facebook page to organize a mass protest in any Middle Eastern nation is fine.
shit just got israel
wow totally haven't heard that one before
Those are Palestinian heads.
I am pretty sure the nationality of the heads are irrelevant. They're still severed heads.
Those are Palestinian heads.
Oh nevermind then.
I am pretty sure the nationality of the heads are irrelevant. They're still severed heads.
It is entirely relevant when it is the difference between "I did/am going to do this to an Israeli" and "Israelis did this to my people."
I am pretty sure the nationality of the heads are irrelevant. They're still severed heads.
The idea is to present this logic "This is what Israel does to us, this shows evil they do". And I love the double standards of FB. I can point out many many groups that call for violence to SOMEONE. And I remember on "I am Jewish" page, I got a update with some mods of that posting news articles and pictures advocating overthrowing Middle Eastern countries and killing 'bloodthirsty' Muslims. ain't no one said anything about it.
I say Hitler had the right idea.
I am pretty sure the nationality of the heads are irrelevant. They're still severed heads.
The LocalFlavor and Guardian-Angle pretty much said what I was going to say. The nationalities are extremely relevant as it displays what Israel has done to the Palestinians. [editline]30th March 2011[/editline]
Lol with pictures of severed heads, it's obviously not going to be violent. No siree!
Read the above.
Read the above.
What do you mean I was obviously saying that there is no threat of violence from the group did you even read my post come on man I said "it's obviously not going to be violent" come on man.
Those are Palestinian heads.
Come on, let's not get into an argument over who's heads are who's, there's plenty of severed heads in the Middle East for everyone.
What do you mean I was obviously saying that there is no threat of violence from the group did you even read my post come on man I said "it's obviously not going to be violent" come on man.
It's a bit to late to backpedal. You were clearly being sarcastic.

Starpluck I dunno if he was trolling I think that's just how he usually acts. [editline]29th March 2011[/editline] like an asshole
If that's normal for him (Trolling, "Hitler was right" crap), then he doesn't belong here.
Back on topic, this isn't a double standard. It had been up for weeks, was reported numerous times but was not taken down, apparently a government official in Israel sent a letter to Zuckerberg (proving himself to be an idiot in doing so). It was watched and while violent content was deleted by the administrators of the group, it was deemed to be a peaceful event with violent posters. When the administrators stopped deleting violent things and started encouraging violence, then it became official and Facebook administrators took it down when the group's administrators would not.
