The touchdown was delayed by rain and fog that dissipated as the sun rose, allowing Mission Control to take advantage of the morning's second landing opportunity. Discovery swooped through a hazy sky before landing on the Kennedy Space Centre runway. NASA briefly considered bringing the shuttle in to the opposite end of the strip because of puffy clouds, but the glare from the sun was too great and flight controllers stuck to the original plan. In the end, Commander Alan Poindexter made what appeared to be a smooth touchdown, a day late because of rain. "Welcome home," Mission Control said, radioing congratulations on the entire flight. "It was a great mission. We enjoyed it," Poindexter said. "And we're glad that the International Space Station is stocked up again."
Source
I was in class when it came back into the atmosphere. Fucking sonic boom scared the shit out of me.
I was in class when it came back into the atmosphere. Fucking sonic boom scared the shit out of me.
I highly doubt you heard it re-enter. Re-entry is done at over 200k feet.
I highly doubt you heard it re-enter. Re-entry is done at over 200k feet.
So? It's not like the space shuttle slows down below the speed of sound as soon as it re-enters. It re-enters at 400,000 ft with a speed of mach 25. In the lower atmosphere it still has a speed of mach 3.
It's not going to keep sonic booming.
Shut up he said he heard it
Everyone stop arguing and stay on topic.
Everyone stop arguing and stay on topic.
We should stop arguing, but staying on topic? That's stupid, you're stupid
I highly doubt you heard it re-enter. Re-entry is done at over 200k feet.
I heard it too, except it was seconds before it touched down.
We should stop arguing, but staying on topic? That's stupid, you're stupid
Stupid! Anyway, does anyone know who bought Discovery? This was it's last mission, so now there's nothing left except for it to be delivered to whoever bought it for $30 million last year.
Stupid! Anyway, does anyone know who bought Discovery? This was it's last mission, so now there's nothing left except for it to be delivered to whoever bought it for $30 million last year.
They are putting it into a museum.
We should stop arguing, but staying on topic? That's stupid, you're stupid
HEY DONT SAY THAT ABOUT "Insert Name Here" I OUGHTA KICK YOUR ASS LETS TAKE THIS OUTSIDE
It's not going to keep sonic booming.
Uhhh, yes it does, that's how it works. A sonic boom is a wave of air behind something going faster than sound, like a wake behind a boat.

Its such a shame the shuttle program is now two launches away from being complete.
I was eating lunch with my buddy out in the commons when the sonic boom hit. I had just seen it flying on the cafeteria TVs so I was the first to get what it was. We were all happy they made it home safe.
I want to hear a sonic boom :(
I highly doubt you heard it re-enter. Re-entry is done at over 200k feet.
holy shit faze you need to stop posting or something.
I highly doubt you heard it re-enter. Re-entry is done at over 200k feet.
and http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=220_1228202868 Double sonic boom due to the shockwave created around the nose and the tail. You don't see the shuttle in the first video, but the sound is immense.
It's not going to keep sonic booming.
It isn't going to Sonic Boom at all until it hits below Mach 1 genius
Sonic booms occur because the sound waves cannot 'escape' the craft and pile up, creating a cone like shockwave emanating from the nose and other surfaces such as the tail wing and travel outwards behind the craft like a wake travelling away from a boat. When this cone hits you, you will hear the sonic boom. Therefore as long as the craft is travelling above Mach 1, you will hear a sonic boom.
Space Shuttle Discovery Back On Earth
They really ought to keep a better handle on arrival/departure times.
I want to hear a sonic boom :(
Why its just a loud "bang"
Pisses me off how people spend so much money on BULLSHIT.. but shit like this, if people spent more resources for the same causes, we'd be out of this planet already, seriously
