Take a brand that’s been historically weak in a particular country, mix with some disastrous PR, changing cultures and an ascendant competitor, and you’ve got a recipe for some disappointing sales numbers. Microsoft’s Xbox has never had the strongest presence in Sony’s home turf of Japan, and the Xbox One is off to a pretty bad start. According to Famitsu (via IGN), the console has shifted only 24,562 units since launch on September 4th. In contrast, the Xbox 360 sold more than 60,000 units to Japanese customers in its first week, and even that was considered disappointing.
Titanfall was the console’s best performing game with 22,416 copies sold, though the presence of a reasonably priced Titanfall bundle obviously inflates those figures. Kinect Sports Rivals sold 14,191, and Dead Rising 3 managed 7,130. Microsoft always knew that Japan was going to be a difficult market, but even so, these numbers must be a bit difficult.
Sony managed to sell 300,000 PS4s in the two days after its Japanese launch, but its worth noting that sales have been a little tepid since, though supply constraints make those numbers difficult to interpret. Some also blame the lack of exclusive titles specific to the Japanese market, so we’ll see what happens after the Tokyo Game Show. It’s hard to imagine the sort of blockbuster exclusive that could revitalize the Xbox brand in the country, though nothing is impossible.
The PS4 continues to outpace the Xbox One in the global market as well: Sony recently revealed 10 million units sold, and Microsoft has been a bit mum on numbers for a few months now. The company announced that it had shipped 5 million units to retailers back in April, but that’s the last we’ve heard. It’s still early in the game, but a lead like this is impressive nonetheless. The second holiday season is crucial to the success of any console, so Microsoft is going to have to put in a strong performance to avoid falling inexorably behind.
Of course, the fall video game season has come to an explosive start with Destiny, and while we don’t have any actual numbers yet, it’s safe to assume that Activision and Bungie’s new sprawling space opera is doing a whole lot more to drive PS4 sales than Xbox One. Most of the biggest games of the season are multi-platform, so I wouldn’t expect anything but a continuation of current trends.
The PS4 outselling it 12:1 holy crap, I know Xbox in Japan was never that popular but this is insane.
This is not that surprising.
What was the PS3 to 360 ratio?
OP, you linked to a Destiny article.

Makes sense seeing as PS4 launched earlier and Japan is Sony's home market.

Lots of loyalty to domestic products in Japan. If Microsoft was a japanese compay it be more neck and neck.
What was the PS3 to 360 ratio?
The 360 sold 60000 at launch, but it was apparently fairly advertised. The 360 sold 1.6 million units during it's lifetime in Japan, the PS3 sold ~10.5. This is really to be expected.

I'd say Apple is an outlier of that trend.
Apple products tend to be fairly popular in Japan.

Launch as in launch day or launch week?
Lots of loyalty to domestic products in Japan. If Microsoft was a japanese compay it be more neck and neck.
While I won't argue against the loyalty argument, it probably has something to do with the game selection available. Doubt Microsoft has barely any Japan-focused games.
Launch as in launch day or launch week?
I'm gonna check up on that, but I'm pretty sure we're talking the launch week.
Edit: After reading this on Wikipedia, I'm starting to doubt even that 60000 figure:
While other regions such as the United States or Europe enjoyed successful launches, sales in Japan have been very slow. In fact, only 103,990 units had been sold by the end of April 2, 2006
That's after 3.5 months of sale.
Makes sense seeing as PS4 launched earlier and Japan is Sony's home market.
The PS4 is doing pretty poorly as well. The Wii U outsells it pretty much every week over there.

damn
didn't know it was that bad
Not surprising considering ps4 probably has more games that are exclusive to Japan
The PS4 is doing pretty poorly as well. The Wii U outsells it pretty much every week over there.
the wii u doing better doesn't equate to the ps4 doing bad
The PS4 is doing pretty poorly as well. The Wii U outsells it pretty much every week over there.
well the Wii U actually has games while the PS4 only has multiplats, half of which are on last gen consoles as well
damn
didn't know it was that bad
Well, it's pretty cool that the 360 actually almost sold as much as the PS3, considering it had almost no market penetration in Japan.
But I think the 60000 figure is correct, a lot of articles are citing it (okay, games journalism is a joke, but still), but I can't really be arsed to find a proper source right now.
the wii u doing better doesn't equate to the ps4 doing bad
The PS4 has sold less than 8k each week for the past ten weeks. Not that the Wii U is doing amazingly, but it is doing better.
what surprises me the most is that some guy in Japan woke up one day and thought to himself "im going to buy an xbone"
Don't worry guys, Titanfall will save the Xbone! I mean Phil Spencer. I mean Halo. I mean Netflix?
[sp]I love the 'bone but it ain't gonna sell in Japan.[/sp]
At this point Microsoft are releasing their consoles in Japan as more of an obligation to the few Japanese fans, and the few western fans living in Japan, than a real attempt to win the market.
When the XBox was released in Japan it sold terribly, When the 360 was released it sold terribly, and now the XBone is following suit.
Are there no like, reverse-Otakus? Like Japanese people who are insanely attracted to everything American? :v:

Hideo Kojima?
I'd say Apple is an outlier of that trend.
Apple products tend to be fairly popular in Japan.
Apple products are status icons by and large. Its almost like clothing or jewelry. Its something you flaunt to those around you.
Hideo Kojima?
Pretty sure Kojima is just attracted to everything. Literally everything.
How many people on Facepunch actually like the Xbox One? I feel like I'm one of the few.
Seems as though most just blatantly hate against it. Why all the anger man?
Are there no like, reverse-Otakus? Like Japanese people who are insanely attracted to everything American? :v:
They exist, I forgot what they were called but they highly praised shows like Spongebob and other western media.
While I won't argue against the loyalty argument, it probably has something to do with the game selection available. Doubt Microsoft has barely any Japan-focused games.
Even having games that would appeal to the Japanese audience probably wouldn't help it much.
I mean when Tales of Vesperia (The second best selling Xbox 360 game in Japan) was first released as an Xbox 360 exclusive it only sold around 70,000 copies on launch and 200,000 copies total despite being the latest entry in a hugely popular JRPG series.
By comparison, when they re-released it on PS3 a year and a half later, it sold 150,000 copies in one day and almost half a million total over the years.
anyone who wanted the xbox one probably already had it considering it's region free and stores in japan were already carrying imported consoles months ago
not saying that sales are actually good. they're probably not any better even taking into account the import sales (which dont get tracked by famitsu/mediacreate) but it's something to consider
My game culture is too different. Lets get real.

Still waiting on that ps3 release of Vesperia over here dammit.
