Lynyrd Skynyrd.
In 1970, Van Zant sought a new name. "One Percent" and "The Noble Five" were each considered before the group settled on "Leonard Skinnerd", a mocking tribute to a physical-education teacher at Robert E. Lee High School, Leonard Skinner,[4] who was notorious for strictly enforcing the school's policy against boys having long hair.
 Edit: Please try and say where it came from.
Hmm. I would have to say The Strokes. Here is why they chose it [release]Julian: Because it means a lot of things that are artistic and strong. We all do interesting things in different ways and the words means interesting things in different ways. It just made so much sense that you can’t deny it. Fab: We’d rejected a bunch of names. Nikolai said that made us laugh for days: ‘de Niros’ as in ‘the Niros’. I used to think of what the word actually meant: a stroke [holds his heart in an inaccurate medical mime], a stroke… blow to the face… a stroke in a painting. The one I think of the most is the brushstroke. But now I just of five dudes standing around. Nikolai: There were so many different meanings to it, it could never pin us down. So many people have said ‘stroke of luck’, ‘stroke this’… there’s never one thing they can focus on. There’s when you have a stroke, cerebral congestion; there’s a stroke when you play guitar; then there’s the obvious sexual undertones. Nick: When it first came up, it was like, ‘Oh, The Strokes, like a wank.’ Then a person said ‘No, it’s The Strokes like a heart attack’. Then another person said,’…like a caress’. It rolled off the tongue really well – sort of violent and sort of sexual and it just sounded cool to everybody. Albert: We’d come in with all these bad names – the de Niros, the Rubber Bands, the Motels, Flattop Freddie and the Purple Canoes – and no one would agree. One day we’re in the studio after practice and Julian said ‘The Strokes’. And everyone was like ‘that sounds great!’. It was that easy; five guys agreeing. it doesn’t really mean anything. We thought it was a cool rock and roll name. When I first heard it, it sounded so old, like someone would have already taken it but no one did. Then I looked it up in the dictionary and ‘a powerful blow to the face, chest or body’ was the first thing. Perfect. That’s exactly what our music is. It’s like a powerful blow to the face.[/release]

Worst: Death Cab For Cutie Such a good band but Death Cab For Cutie makes it sound like a metal band or emo shit or something Ninja'd
Lawnmower Deth. "SCRAWM then changed the name to LAWNMOWER DETH, with the premise that putting the fun into Thrash and Death Metal music with a madcap slant was the way to fame and fortune." It works, I guess.
but... they are kinda emo
Hmm...well I guess you're right. But, not the kind you would normally think.
St. Vincent St. Vincent. Her stage name is a reference to Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Center where the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas died in 1953. "It’s the place where poetry comes to die," she has said. "That’s me." And Rilo Kiley, because Blake Sennett is an asshole and gives different explinations whenever he's asked about then origin. On the syndicated radio show Loveline in August 2005, Sennett explained that he had a dream in which he was being chased by a sports almanac: "when it got me, I leafed through it...and I came upon an Australian-rules football player from the 19th century named Rilo Kiley. It's kind of embarrassing." In 2005, Sennett told Planet Sound Teletext Magazine that the name came from a Scottish athlete. In an interview published in Q magazine in September 2007, Sennett offered this explanation: "Rilo Kiley is named after a character he'd met in a dream who had predicted the date of Jenny Lewis' death."

iwrestledabearonce
Iwrestledabearonce were formed in 2007 in Shreveport, Louisiana as the first in the local avant-garde metal movement (along with such bands as Ballet Brutality and Scared of the Dark).[citation needed] The origin of the band's name was inspired by a comment that Gary Busey had said on Comedy Central.
:iia:

Giraffes? Giraffes! Just fun to say giraffes in a confused tone of voice and then yell giraffes.
Godspeed you! Black Emperor. The name itself was based off of a japanese documentary following a biker gang.
Porcupine Tree [editline]4th May 2011[/editline] Because it's a Porcupine Tree.
More than the name I love that Steven Wilson basically made the band up as some unsung band of prog heroes from the 70's that the original demos paid homage to :v: [editline]17th May 2011[/editline] Also, I have to agree that Wolves in the Throne Room is such a good name
