Google is launching more than 100 new YouTube channels with exclusive video content commissioned from media companies and celebrities.Providers with their own channels will include Thomson Reuters, the Wall Street Journal, Slate, comedy magazine The Onion, Jay-Z, Ashton Kutcher, Deepak Chopra, Shaquille O'Neal (who will have a comedy channel), and Madonna (with a dance channel). Sources familiar with the deal say that Google paid advances of more than $100 million to get this content. The artists will be able to earn it back through ad monetization over time. The model is similar to how record labels pay advances to artists, but in this case Google will be exercising no control over the creation or production of the content. It's simply seeding the market. We've heard several times in recent months that Google is upping its investment in original video content under leader Robert Kynci -- as one source put it, the company would rather fund the next MTV or ESPN than buy them, as it was reportedly considering with a YouTube deal. Earlier today, Google launched the next version of Google TV, which includes a new YouTube app. The company talked about accessing YouTube content as "channels" -- now it's got some commitments for new content to go on those channels. Earlier today, the Wall Street Journal reported that a number of content deals were imminent. youtube is becoming way too commercialised i thought the original idea was that everyone regardless of who you were had the same power over their videos and channel i wonder how that worked out
youtube is becoming way too commercialised i thought the original idea was that everyone regardless of who you were had the same power over their videos and channel i wonder how that worked out
Corporations saw something that they didn't have and wanted it.
Youtube nowadays is about dislike/like bar jokes, trolls that gets on your channels and comments, sub4sub whores, annoying orange and shit (By that I mean licensed stuff.). EDIT: I also forgot to mention: Constant layout changes.
+1 if you dislike shitty features and corporatized youtube!
Calling it now, TV will be dead in a 20 years and replaced entirely by watching things on the internet.
In twenty years, people are going to have the "feed", a brain implant that keeps you constantly connected to your favorite shows, movies and internet websites. And yes, I did jack this idea off of the book, "feed."

Then unleash the lawyers! You'll make trillions.
youtube is kind of lame now
youtube is kind of lame now
I would say the shittiest thing is how they're changing everything every 2 days. Ads that are 30 seconds for a 15 second video and yada yada.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention: Constant layout changes.
Its a video hosting site, it does that well. Who gives a shit about the other stuff. When it comes down to it it is the best service for sharing and watching videos. I don't see how a site like YouTube can suddenly be lame, you don't see people switching image hosting sites on a regular basis because they think its lame do you.
I do kind of like how they added the watch later. Since my favorites would get full and you can only add like one a day after that. It's nice to have a separate place to dump things while keeping the same purpose.
Calling it now, TV will be dead in a 20 years and replaced entirely by watching things on the internet.
Definitely not. Sitting down on the couch and turning on the wide screen TV will always have its place when the only other option is sitting upright at a computer monitor. Plus TV forces you sometimes to watch things you normally wouldn't when there's nothing on which can turn out to be something you're really in to.
Maybe now that YT want to give special treatment, alter view counts, and mimulipulate "Most Popular" video lists to major corporations, will we finally see them dump RayWilliamJohnson, smosh, and every other talentless "vlogging" hack whose name isn't even worthy of me remembering?
You totally ignored tablets, only gamers and people with computer related jobs or video editors still use desktops.
Neither tablets or desktop computers work for if you're not alone and are watching with other people Then you need a TV
I actually like what YouTube is trying to do. It's about time somebody attacked the locked-down model of cable companies, monthly fees, and set viewing schedules. That being said though, I hope they don't get too caught up in all this and lose sight of their original purpose.
Calling it now, TV will be dead in a 20 years and replaced entirely by watching things on the internet.
It's already like that to me. I just plug in my HDMI cord from the laptop to my TV to watch a show.
Man, couple of years ago YouTube was another one of those countless video sites. There was a kid in class who visited YouTube for the teacher using the projector and we had no idea what it was...

I'm pretty sure in 2009, Youtube was still pretty much THE video site. Maybe 6 or 7 years ago
you don't see people switching image hosting sites on a regular basis because they think its lame do you.
Gyazo.
Calling it now, TV will be dead in a 20 years and replaced entirely by watching things on the internet.
Aren't we already doing that by ordering internet tv instead of the cable one? Also if it does totally switch, I hope it will not be the subpar quality rwj knockoffs and instead actually good shows.
I would say the shittiest thing is how they're changing everything every 2 days. Ads that are 30 seconds for a 15 second video and yada yada.
Ads are only for YouTube partners, though. They get to choose themselves if they want ads on their videos and it funds their videos. It can also happen if there's a copyrighted song in the video, in that case the record companies recieve the ad revenue which is much better than having the video taken down.
People on this site get all fucking hipster over youtube. "Baww i dont use youtube because it's different to how it used to look, I use another video site you've probably never heard of."
Pretty sure they will announce some bullshit "Premium/subscription" model anytime soon
People on this site get all fucking hipster over youtube. "Baww i dont use youtube because it's different to how it used to look, I use another video site you've probably never heard of."
Youtube is great purely for watching videos. I see nothing wrong with it at all. It has tons of content. What's not to like? Also Adblock = no ads on videos.
Calling it now, TV will be dead in a 20 years and replaced entirely by watching things on the internet.
Calling it now, radio will be dead in 20 years and replaced entirely by watching things on the television. Oh..

It might not be from YouTube, but it will be over the internet.
youtube is becoming way too commercialised i thought the original idea was that everyone regardless of who you were had the same power over their videos and channel i wonder how that worked out
Your lack of capital letters, comers and full stops angers me. This is what Facepunch has done to me!
When google bought youtube I was all like "oh fuck yeah, the site will always be up, awesome accessibility, they'll correct everything that's wrong !" A few years later, they raped the website with copyrights, pissed over the little users and pushed random people to pollute their own site to make money.
youtubes not bad if all you want to do is watch some videos, which what it was made for really
