the Navy has the goal of using the railgun to fire 200 nautical miles with Mach 7 velocity using 64 megajoules with full deployment to ships in about 2020-2025. The Office of Naval Research said railgun achieved a world-record 33-megajoule shot. That energy measurement means the Navy could fire projectiles at least 110 miles. The new munition would eliminate the need for a high-energy explosive, and put sailors farther away from harm’s way. The railgun is being developed for use on a wide range of ships. I was hoping it would be like a rifle or something you can run around with.

How are they planning to power them on-board ships?
How are they planning to power them on-board ships?
It's not like it's hard or anything. Just mount them and plug them in to the fucking nuclear reactor and a capacitor bank.
-snip-
Neat.
How are they planning to power them on-board ships?
Nuclear generators.
So instead of putting more money on NASA, general science research, schools e.t.c, they spend it on finding better ways to bomb the arabs?
How are they planning to power them on-board ships?
Nuclear reactors and/or capacitor banks.
So instead of putting more money on NASA, general science research, schools e.t.c, they spend it on finding better ways to bomb the arabs?
Most of the technologies you have today have come out of military R&D.
Space Weapons Level 1.
Have they fixed the melting after twenty or so shots yet?
Most of the technologies you have today have come out of military R&D.
Maybe that wouldn't be the case if they wouldn't spend half of their budget on the military.
Holy shit guys this is the gun that the History Channel told me would destroy alien ships!

They just finally got around to making a railgun?
This is pretty awesome, I wonder when they'll be able to get a handheld version.
So instead of putting more money on NASA, general science research, schools e.t.c, they spend it on finding better ways to bomb the arabs?
No nothing changed. They have been developing railgun technology for years.
Thats pretty awesome. I saw a railgun video about a year ago but it was nothing on this kind of scale.

Science and education are the only ways to truly progress.
Tell that to the 87-year-old luddite nutjob they picked as Science guy or whatever. Seriously, the people is fucked, until this comes along: http://www.molecularassembler.com/Nanofactory/
:science: Oh man, cant wait until we can use a handheld version to propel depleted uranium slugs.
How are they planning to power them on-board ships?
Not hard to do nuclear reactor and a capacitor bank Ships already have reactors on bored [editline]11th December 2010[/editline]
Holy shit guys this is the gun that the History Channel told me would destroy alien ships!
Yep YAY !
Expected this: Got this: :saddowns: Lame.
:911:
My comment about plugging in the railgun to a nuclear reactor was not meant to be a joke but I'm glad you guys like my post so much :unsmith:

Just so you guys get an idea of how far this thing can fire, you're firing a projectile at a target you can't see because it's over the horizon.
