A man has choked to death while taking part in a hot dog eating competition.
Walter Eagle Tail, 47, died during the contest in Custer, South Dakota, over the Fourth of July weekend when the food got lodged in his throat.
A pie eating contest had been planned for the next in the town, but it was cancelled as a result of Mr Tail's death.
Custer County Sheriff Rick Wheeler said: "There was someone doing CPR when we arrived. Basically he probably just suffocated. It got lodged in his throat and they couldn't get it out.
"It all happened within minutes. I think everybody was pretty well shocked about it."
The Rapid City Journal newspaper described the death as putting 'a damper on the festivities' and organisers are considering changes to the competitive eating contest next year.
Friend Ardis McRae told the paper: "Walter was just being Walter, having fun when he entered this contest. He was just having a good time."
He died with the most badass name I have ever seen
Walter Eagle Tail
Nobody knew the Heimlich maneuver?
He knew the risks, but followed his dreams.
God speed Eagle Tail. The world is worse for your loss.
walter was just being walter
stuffing hotdogs in his mouth until he dies
Fly free Eagle Tail

I doubt it would have worked. Usually they swallow the meat part of the hotdog whole, then dip the bun in water and swallow that
I find it kind of quaint that a small event (relatively speaking) in some far flung corner of a relatively insignificant american state features in an irish newspaper.

That sounds like an incredibly bad idea
Not that it sounded like a good idea before, mind you
This is how I'd want to die
ramming so many sausages in my mouth that I die
I was just watching the how it's made for hot dogs. This is awkward.
The Custer County Chronicle reported on this like, a week ago.
Wasn't this a CSI episode.
Personally I always found eating competitions disgusting.
Crazy story.
A hotdog eating contest with no medical support around? How reckless.

Sadly, they only knew the Heinz-lick maneuver there.

It's less quaint, and more likely the product of an editor finding the idea of a fat American choking to death on a phallic food product funny.

Either way, it's terrible to see someone die unnaturally. The story and picture also give me the impression he was a really nice and friendly guy.

Yeah, there are some cool Native American names.

God speed.
Most American man i've ever heard of
Eating contests are fucking stupid, a fun little thing with your friends is usually fine but people push themselves too much when it comes to actual competition.
he looked and sounded like a nice guy
At least he died doing what he loved
I heard something once about how the shape of hot dogs makes them nigh-impossible to remove from someone's esophagus once they get jammed.
"Golly. That sure puts a damper on our eating competitions"
eating contests are retarded
Maybe he shouldn't have eaten so many hotdogs
From the look of his gut...the Heimlich AND CPR would have been hilariously impossible. I doubt you could even reach his diaphram much less put pressure on it. Good luck compressing his ribcage too, I bet you could push down a few inches and his heart would say "lol wut".

It would either way be impossible in his case because of 1) what he was eating and 2) How they usually eat it. If the hotdog wound up in his trachea, godspeed trying to pull it out.
