• Doors not unlocking when shifting into park - why?

I never really thought anything of this until I drove my friend's car and noticed that the doors unlock when I shifted out of drive and back into park. I figured that my car was just older and just didn't have that feature, but I noticed that Edmunds mentioned that a new feature for my model year was "automatic door locks unlock when car is shifted into "Park."". So it is a feature, it's just not working. Does anybody have any ideas what I can look at to find the problem? The locks will engage when I shift into drive, they just don't unlock once I go back into park. It's a 1994 Buick Regal Custom sedan.
"First World Problems."
Yours specifically isn't equipped with it? Some cars you can play with that nonsense and turn it off with some fancy button pressing, but I can't say that pertains to that car or not.
Car ran out of mana The automatic unlocking was optional iirc
you need to use your boost button
Everyone think's it's funny until you sit there waiting for 30 minutes for AAA :-(
Because you were too stupid to pull your keys out of your car when you parked it? That's bad practice in the first place, regardless of if your doors automatically lock or not.
Well you can't get out without unlocking the door right?
Well you can't get out without unlocking the door right?
That's what I was assuming. I don't think I have ever seen a car that doesn't unlock the door when you open it.
There's plenty out there that don't unlock when you open the door from the inside... but there's also none out there that allow you to open the door with the door locked that DONT unlock it with that action. Of course with the proper broken crap I'm sure it could happen.. but still.
wait wat
I think what he was trying to say was that there are plenty of cars that don't unlock all of the doors when you open a single door, but none that he knows of where the door being opened does not unlock as you open it, if it is locked. Thats actually what I was saying as well. My car does not unlock all of the doors if I get out either, but when I open either of the front doors, if there locked, they unlock as they are opened. The rear doors do not unlock automatically as you open them however, they simply cannot be opened from the inside if locked, you have to unlock them manually. Back to topic at hand, my 2003 Camry does not auto unlock when put into park, but does when put into drive. Far as I know the unlock on park is only a feature on some cars. Notably a lot of American cars do it, but not so much foreign ones, for whatever reason. Also my car auto locks itself if you unlock it using the remote and then don't open any of the doors for thirty seconds. This has lead to more than once locking my keys in trunk accidentally lol :D Anyway all that said, I would not worry if your car does not auto unlock on park, as it does not seem to be universal feature. On the other hand if it does not unlock as you open the front doors, or atleast drivers door, and you are able to open it with it remaining locked, that probably indicates a problem with the locking mechanism.
Close, lol. Reworded previous post: There's a lot of cars that won't allow you to open the door from the inside if it's locked. However, the vehicles that DO allow you to open the door from the inside while it's locked, ALWAYS mechanically unlock the door that's being opened in the process. Eee that's a little easier to read I think.
It made sense the first time to me.
when you open the door

won't allow you to open the door
No. :v:
They are literally saying the same thing.
Woops I edited my post instead of replying. v:v:v See: above
Wow, forgot I made this thread :v: Basically every GM vehicle from 1994 to present will lock in drive and unlock in park. I found a wiring diagram and it said that it was an option that my car doesn't have "On 'VIN Model M'"...not "L" which is what I have)...which makes no fucking sense. Oh well.
VERY FEW vehicles made by GM from 1994-1999 had automatic locks like that. Hell, a lot of them didn't have electric locks (Cavalier, Sunfire, Corsica, Grand Am, Grand Prix, pretty much the entire truck line, etc.) unless there was an option for them.

My car has a lot of features that i've never seen in another 90's GM car.
My car unlocks when you press unlock. and locks when you press lock. whats with all this other bs
My car locks when you push the damn knob down and unlocks when you put the key in the door and turn it. What's all this other bs
My doors unlock when I shove a key in the hole, sometimes I gotta jiggle it. Oh and I have to lay down on my bench to reach the passenger door locks from the inside.
Mine lock and unlock through the fob, key, or interior buttons. OR if you're the driver and pull the door handle. Never any other time.
I only lock my doors when I'm in a... uh..... "dark" part of town. C:
Or near hobos.
