A party with conflict is far better than one that goes from town to town saving x, finding y, and killing z. By conflict I mean a series of events in which one or more characters has to take the DM away from the table to do some secret rolls and such.
Other than your suggestion, I think that a party made entirely of Evil characters would also be a good solution.
I like playing the hero though. So I usually stick to neutral/good.
Whenever someone in our group plays an evil guy it's just an excuse to be lazy and do whatever they want.
Had a lawful evil wizard who claimed "blah blah good of the many over the good of the few" and would constantly hit allies with his lightning bolts. Looking back, my two handed fighter (neutral good) should have probably killed him.
Edit: Just to clarify, I meant we had an evil wizard in the group. Not me.

I see that now, but he's the one who introduced me to the game.
I can't wait to play with someone who isn't a dick.
