Tesla loses direct sales lawsuit in Utah Supreme court
Tesla had some successes recently with its many battles to be allowed to sell its vehicles directly to customers instead of having to go through third-party dealerships. While Indiana strengthened its ban in February, Tesla escaped it by being ‘grandfathered in’ and they took a win for direct sales in Wyoming last month.
The winning streak ended today as the Utah Supreme court ruled against the company in a lawsuit seeking to obtain a dealer license in the state.
Tesla had it tough in Utah. The company thought that it could operate in the state so it built a $3 million store in Salt Lake City in 2015 (pictured above), but the full-fledged store was demoted to a gallery/service center two weeks before opening due to the Utah attorney general’s office ruling that it was against the state’s direct sales law.
...
The proposed legislation led to ludicrous exchanges on the assembly floor, like this state legislator making the argument that Tesla shouldn’t be allowed to let people test drive its vehicles and then buy them online because his wife can’t try products from Amazon before buying them

Yes you can. That's why retail stores are dying
Fucking bullshit.

I don't understand, what's stopping me from just sending it back? Fine, I don't exactly buy a tesla to testdrive it either but that comparison is just absurd
like what, does this guy expect me to buy a house, wait for it to finish building and then give it back if it's not like I wanted?
Utah politics is so scummy its literally a theocracy controlled by the Mormon church and its crony capitalist leaders, we have literally the worst air quality in the country and we killed a clean energy tax credit bill and now this.

Since Utah is surrounded by mountains, cold air in the valley keeps smog in the basin while warm air traps it in resulting in some fucking heinous air quality standards.
Just more proof that conservatives are just as pro big government when it suits them

It doesn't matter what party they're affiliated with, they're blatantly paid off by auto companies since Tesla is going to ruin everything theyve worked for for the past 50 years.

aren't democrats pro big government? wouldn't a democrat cheer this restriction?
aren't democrats pro big government? wouldn't a democrat cheer this restriction?
No.
Democrats are "Government should be as big as it needs to be," they don't just support government for the sake of government. There has to be justifications.
Pity. But, with how Tesla is growing this sounds like it's only slowed them instead of stopped them maybe.
Pathetic. This is extremely anti-capitalist and simply wrong. There's no legitimate reason to prevent direct sales. It's simply cause dealerships bribe politicians - if someone is against this and isn't being bribed, they're probably just an idiot.
aren't democrats pro big government? wouldn't a democrat cheer this restriction?
This is a very, very closed-minded outlook on the platform and when applied to reality makes no sense. Not a single democrat I know believes weed should be illegal, yet by that logic they should be praising the pointless restriction of it because it's "big government." The only people who're going to cheer this decision are the ones making money off it and the ones who hate Tesla.

this might actually be the most retarded logic like what
it's called its having a "Better service"
should we also ban paint dealers from going to your house and comparing colors so you can make an informed selection because you can't do that online? what the fuck even is this

it feels like the opposite is true with some republicans I know
anything "Big government" is instantly bad to them, even internet based rights and preventing masses of garbage from being spilled in peoples yards
Obama supported X thing so that makes X thing bad
Anything that doesn't affect them doesn't matter to them
but that's an extreme minority

Tesla is making them literally sweat in fear
All this means is people have to travel out of state to buy, its not going to stop people in Utah from buying one. All this does in the end is fuck Utah out of any potental sales tax revenue. You played yourself, good job. :why:

It's like state governments forget that people (especially the kind of person who can afford to buy a Tesla) can just cross into the next state...

Democrats are not "Pro Big Government," though. Like, bigger government is not the goal, it's just a byproduct of some policy points. Saying that supporting the legalization of weed is hypocritical because democrats want big government is ridiculous lol.
In contrast: "smaller government" is a major ideological talking point of the Republican party.

I concur, that's my argument. I was applying his logic to the scenario to demonstrate its flaws, though I suppose I could've gone more in-depth about what I meant when saying "closed-minded outlook on the platform."

Then somebody should probably let those asshats in office know that :v:
these are the first people who talk about 'the free market', too.

Free market
But also not the market where we have opponents
