Valve founder Gabe Newell has sent a message to all users of the Steam digital download service, providing an update on the ongoing investigation into the Steam hacking incident of November last year.
With the help of outside cyber-crime consultants, Gabe has learned that it's highly likely the hackers got their hands on a file containing Steam transactions from 2004 though to 2008.While there is no evidence that his customers' financial details have been compromised, Gabe is advising Steam users to keep an eye on their credit card statements all the same:Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:
We continue our investigation of last year’s intrusion with the help of outside security experts. In my last note about this, I described how intruders had accessed our Steam database but we found no evidence that the intruders took information from that database. That is still the case.Recently we learned that it is probable that the intruders obtained a copy of a backup file with information about Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008. This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords. We do not have any evidence that the encrypted credit card numbers or billing addresses have been compromised. However as I said in November it’s a good idea to watch your credit card activity and statements. And of course keeping Steam Guard on is a good idea as well.We are still investigating and working with law enforcement authorities. Some state laws require a more formal notice of this incident so some of you will get that notice, but we wanted to update everyone with this new information now.GabeReaders are invited to morbidly speculate in the comments as to which games company will get hacked next.

Why is the image all the way over there on the right?
You could have gotten a better result without using tables, and it would save you time.

All of that, just to place a picture in a bad place.
Why the hell did you put that image to the right.
ITT: people complain about picture layouts.
Interesting, I like when Gabe actually tells us about this shit happening
I want to make a fat joke
I wouldn't call it a "scandal".
<3 thanks Gabe for keeping me updated
Thank your Gabe Newbert for looking out for the little man (me). I love you and will write about you in my diary.

Gabe's so fat his waist length is the equator.
Gabe isn't fat at all, the bulge is created by his large heart.

In this section: People use moronic and pointless picture layouts.

And then it gets leaked and goes another year into development and then comes out with all the fun stuff gone.

I still can't believe half life 2 was originally going to have the borealis in it, aka episode 3, skipping most of episode 1 and 2 in the process.
In the end that hacker did a great service to all of us and to steam by pushing them to rework all the crappy models and widely extend their game further than what it was supposed to be.
Even though I would still have fucking loved to see that Manhack Arcade and air exchanger level.
Gabe should shed weight, not light :v:
Sony gets hacked: Keep customers in the dark, pretend it's not a big deal, word EULA later to cover their asses better
Valve gets hacked: Company owner writes updates on the situation and sends them to every user

Good job Gabe Newbert
And this is a prime example how honesty can prevent a big publicity-trainwreck.

Myth. The Leak was just a content dump, basically all the crap valve had that they dumped in a repository for use later. It was never the finished game/anywhere near it, most of the 2004 hl2 content is IN the leak. The E3 videos were just made because they were strapped for time.
All I saw was "Gabe Newell sheds". I was worried for a moment at the title.
Gabe Newell is dumb

I wonder who started this (friendly) joke. I heard it from UberMunchkin first, but I'm not sure he's the source.
Thanks for telling us what exactly happened...A YEAR AFTERWARD.

They're still investigating it. This is an update. Calm yourself.
