Alarm bells are already ringing in eastern states, and NATO is keen to show it could cope.

The article, which appeared in Spiegel's online edition in German on Sunday, cites an internal North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) draft document pertaining to discussions occurring within the military alliance and among individual members about possible scenarios if Russia were to launch a military campaign in Eastern Europe. The draft document arrives at the conclusion that Russia's ability to "execute a significant military action without much warning poses a wide-reaching threat for maintaining safety and stability in the Euro-Atlantic zone." NATO has observed a Russian troop buildup near its border with Ukraine, but Russia claims it has no current plans for a military move. Ukraine is not a member of NATO, but the alliance is keen to show that it can effectively defend its Baltic members should the need arise.
http://www.dw.de/spiegel-nato-unprepared-if-russia-moved-into-baltic-members/a-17643795?maca=en-rss-en-eu-2092-rdf&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed
Get me Rambo!
[t]http://www.dw.de/image/0,,17590453_303,00.jpg[/t] Oh god, this photo from one of the articles mentioned can get more badass only by getting an explosion on the background. Really, it's hilarious how much it's composition resembles a poster of some action movie.

Of course NATO is unprepared for such an insane move without provocation.

It's however very unthreatening how he reminds me of Bush.
Isn't der Spiegel Germany's daily mail? They even call themselves a news magazine instead of a newspaper, because they're legally not allowed to call themselves a newspaper. EDIT: right, it was Bild. My mistake.

[editline]18th May 2014[/editline] Magazine just means that the print edition appears not as loose sheets but on glossy paper held together by tacks. They do that because they have colour pictures on the stories, but it's high-quality and not sensationalist.
Of course NATO is unprepared for such an insane move without provocation.
It's irksome that people have such a belief that their militaries have god-like abilities to sweep up any opposition with no issue at all in just a matter of moments, anywhere in the world, when reality just isn't like that.

Most NATO nations have severely limited there militaries expecting the US to pick up the slack.
I wouldn't be surprised if Russia got to Germany in a few months. Most NATO nations have severely limited there militaries expecting the US to pick up the slack.
I think you overestimate Russia and underestimate the US. For example. Let's say this is a completely both sides staring each other down attack. Russia borders 5 NATO countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Norway). Russia's army is strong, but Poland isn't a pushover, especially considering Russia can only get weaker as NATO can only get stronger. This excludes the fact that Russia would have to be busy elsewhere (China, Japan, South Korea, NORTHCOM, Turkey), and the fact that their allies would be weakly inclined to join with what they have.
Russia would be destroyed if it attacked a NATO country, they'll never do that. Non NATO countries in eastern Europe are vulnerable though. And not because NATO can't do anything, but because NATO won't want to do anything. It will be up to the people in those countries to fight a guerrilla war against Russia if Russia invaded them. NATO would probably supply them in that case, but not fight for them. Germany having ten times more tanks wasn't going to help Ukraine at all since the Germans aren't going to send them to fight for Ukraine. I'll believe Putin is crazy enough to attack a NATO country when I see it.

If Russia invades any non-NATO country, the UN won't come save them, they're fucked as fucked can be. We're so content with our relative peace that we'll let them do just about anything as long as it isn't attack us directly.

Calm down ladies you have no clue what's been cooking in the military arms tech for the past decades. NATO vs Russia aint gonna happen simply because of the utter destruction it would provoke, none of the combatants would gain anything.

If some think they can win, they'll go for it, regardless of the reality. Regardless of that, I don't foresee a NATO vs. Russia conflict any time soon.

Soviet Pilots in support of North Korea actually engaged UN Pilots, one of the few times in the Cold War where we directly fought Soviet troops.
