Discussion in the Valve subforum, reposted news here so more people would see!
Knowing Valve, it will probably be a closed beta for a while before it's opened up to the public, but still good news nonetheless!
No apps have been added to the sub package yet, but Valve announced a while back that the first games to support Linux will be L4D2 and Serious Sam.

Yeah okay, you maybe joking but for the last couple of threads involving this port, this won't kill windows.
Fuck many game developers haven't even made the effort to go to Mac yet what would make anyone think they'd jump the boat to linux?

I want to point out that although I am waiting for the port like for a salvation, I wouldn't even want Windows to die.
While I don't use windows myself, certain software diversity is always good, if for no other reason, for persistent concurrency.
If only that wasn't shat over by software patents and obfuscating shit through licensing.

What is persistent concurrency?
Personally, I would like to see Windows die off, but obviously Steam isn't going to do that.

I completelly agree with this, however im really glad that major games might come to linux even if its just to get hardware manufacturers to support linux better
I'm still going to use windows because everything else I use uses windows and most of the free software on Linux is also ported to Windows.
How long till Origin for Linux?
Just a reminder: If you're thinking of running Linux, give Kubuntu or Ubuntu a go, they have good interfaces and there's probably alternatives to software you use on windows (Plus there's always wine).

If it's anything like their games for Linux, it'll just be a link to a web app.
Hnnnng I can't wait until it comes, WINE can be quite slow sometimes, at least for me.

Competition.
Time to switch to Linux then

My Ubuntu is ready.

or try mint. I like Mint more.
I'd suggest Debian, its much more stable and secure.

It will only be available on Ubuntu at the start.
Personally, I run gentoo, but that's not something I recommend if you've never tried linux before.
I've heard some good things about Arch though.
It will only be available on Ubuntu at the start.
Somehow I feel like that won't be such a big problem, seeing as I have Spotify installed on my gentoo machine. Even though spotify has only released Debian Squeeze/Ubuntu .deb packages.
Uh, it will only be officially supported on Ubuntu when it launches but that doesn't mean it won't work on other distros, just that there might be problems.
It will only be available on Ubuntu at the start.
That's not how Linux works, Valve just means they'll be providing .deb packages.
I'd give it an hour or two for it to be available on 5 other distro's

Heck, as long as there's no weird dependencies, it should work immediately if you use Alien.
Finally, can't wait for this.
So, is Linux a good alternative to Windows for a gaming computer now, or not for a good while yet? A friend of mine is saying it runs games and such perfectly, but i'm a little skeptical.

Not for a good while if ever

Yes, if you have a good GPU then most games tend to run alright in wine if you're willing to put up with it (If you don't want to put up with wine, you can install Play On Linux and it'll sort out wine for you). You can look up the game on WineHQ to see how well it runs.
