The first winged roller coaster built on British soil is has begun testing ahead of its opening this Spring. The ride is apparently so violent that some test dummies have come back sans limbs.
The Swarm is being built at Thorpe Park in Surrey. Being "winged," riders' legs will hang freely from their seats as they rocket around at 62MPH. Problem is that some of the testing dummies began coming back missing bits that actual people would probably notice. So, the park called in air-force pilots to provide a second opinion.
"I am a self-confessed adrenaline junkie but even as a pilot used to G-force there were some gut-wrenching moments, and I have to admit the near miss element is eye-watering - you really do feel as if you are going to crash into the structures,'" pilot Mark Cutmore told the Metro.
The ride is set to open March 15th. And sure, this could all just be PR hype to build excitement for the ride—there's been some speculation to that effect—but damn if it isn't effective. The potential for catastrophic injury and possible high-speed death should prove irresistible to adrenaline junkies. The winged coaster being built in America just to show how they work more.

holy shit that's intense
Now you BETTER keep them arms and legs inside the car at all times.
That looks like the most fun thing ever... Sign me up.
I want to go on it, but the fact it ripped limbs off of test dummies kind of scares me a bit.
holy shit i want to go on that
Fuck that.

Holy shit
You know it's god damn insane ride if even airforce pilots are frightened.
Some sort of arm constraint should be required... Otherwise, these coaster types aren't really new. The only new element here is the traveling really close to the inside of objects, such as that grey split building. They make it sound like these wing carriage styled coasters are some new fancy tech when it's several years old at this point.
I love Thorpe Park.
This looks aweseome and I want to try this.
That's why I have four of them.
Looks awesome, but I kind of enjoy having limbs.
I'm getting sick just looking at it.

A similar one, X2, in Six Flags Magic Mountain (Valencia California) is rather intense in itself, I can't imagine a more violent one than that. Actually, I'm not going to go with violent, more of shaky. The seats wobble a ton and can give you a headache.
and 70% of it is going up in preparation to drop.
gee this sounds familiar
I can't imagine what it would feel like if the forces were so strong that they started tearing at your limbs.
But if it's safe I might do it once if only for my first heart attack
It's fake, the injuries anyway. It was produced as a publicity stunt a month ago and a real roller coaster designer proved it was fake. Shots of the broken limbs were taken before the coaster was set on the test run. Those are also shop mannequins not test dummies, the real test was completed in December.
I'll try to find the article.
This isn't the one I'm talking about but you can read and see the speculation about how it seems faked: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2091480/Thorpe-Park-The-Swarm-ride-test-run-sees-dummies-return-limbs-snapped-off.html
Fuck yeah, I loved Stealth, the Saw ride was disappointing in comparison.
Oh shit, that's super bad ass.
I guess they would need these consent forms where you might get your limbs ripped off.
Publicity stunt. Such a ride would never be opened if there was credible evidence that it posed a significant risk to riders and park patrons.
I bet you could lose your soul in this ride. I rather not take chances with this sort of attraction
I heard this was a marketing stunt. Saw it a couple of weeks ago in a newspaper.

Haha I remember going to Six Flags during the opening week of the ride. The ride's not really violent and even though the seats are flipping around during the ride you're pretty well secured.
You're close enough to the fire to actually feel the intense heat, though.
This thing look scary when I saw it while they were building it in October. Looks even scarier now that its completed.
Clearly a PR stunt though, they have to design the near-miss stuff with more than enough room.

I dunno, Stealth is a great ride but its pretty boring. The Saw ride is more exciting imo.
Needs more Euthanasia Coaster

I'm willing to be a test subject
I really wish Alton Towers didn't turn into a Disney-esque kiddie land. It's such a beautiful place.

Thorpe Park looks like an industrial estate.
:10bux:
First day it gets shut down as somes hand gets ripped off
As a coaster enthusiast, I can guarantee that was definitely a publicity stunt. The ride is built by B&M and their rides happen to be some of the safest and smoothest riding ones out there.
