SAO PAULO (AP) — A Brazilian court ruled this week that McDonald's (MCD) must pay a former franchise manager $17,500 because he gained 65 pounds while working there for a dozen years. The 32-year-old man said he felt forced to sample the food each day to ensure quality standards remained high, because McDonald's hired "mystery clients" to randomly visit restaurants and report on the food, service and cleanliness. The man also said the company offered free lunches to employees, adding to his caloric intake while on the job. His identity was not released. Filho said McDonald's could appeal the case, and the Brazilian headquarters of the chain said in an e-mailed statement Thursday it was weighing its legal options. McDonald's also noted that it offers healthier food choices. "The chain offers a large variety of options and balanced menus to cater (to) the daily dietary needs of its employees," the company said in the statement. good thing ? I guess
Cases like this should be thrown out of court instantly. You're obviously at fault for not having willpower. Who the fuck cares if it's the easiest thing to eat, that's just his willpower failing him. Not mcdonalds shoving food down his throat.
$17,500 can buy a lot of chicken mcnuggets

Couldn't he simply work off the weight?

Sounds like bs to me.

The best way to tell if the damn burger tastes good is to try some.

I mean they make the shit so simple to operate that you have to really fuck something up to make it not servable. It's not really the same thing as being chef that makes stuff from scratch.
Wow what a bunch of bullshit
A dozen years? Wow what a loser, what the fuck was he doing with his life?

What do they call a quarter pounder in europe
a royal with cheese.
And a year later, 40% of that will be payed back to McDonalds through his habit of eating there.

I work in the food industry too, you need to taste your food. However that's no excuse to become a fatass and sue the company

As someone who works in fast food, I really don't think this is right. I've worked for a year in the Australian equivalent of Burger King, and we have Mystery Shoppers too - however, I've never seen anyone "taste-test" food. That sounds highly unhygenic, and where do you stop testing? I think that's just a stupid excuse. Same goes for the "free lunches". I'm sure that's true, but no-one's forcing him to eat them. As earlier stated, he could have used some willpower - it's not like you suddenly wake up hugely overweight. I side with Maccas on this one.

That's awesome. People still do ridiculous lawsuits down there. I'm moving to Brazil.
A dozen years? Wow what a loser, what the fuck was he doing with his life?
You are forgetting that Billions of people get paid less than a worker at McDonalds. And a lot of folks have no choice. And I assume you live in a middle class and predominately white neighborhood, which means you get no exposure to the real world.

He said that they offer employees a 50% discount and give them exceptionally short lunch breaks which make it nearly impossible for them to get anything else to eat. (The staff was not allowed to use the fridge to store a lunch brought from home)
Couldn't he just taste it, and then not actually swallow it?
I used to work at McDonald's as a kid. Oh the stories...so many angry fat people.
