Mandatory disc installations come part and parcel with PS4, but it seems long a laborious install wait times will not. Game installs of several gigabytes took tens of minutes on PS3, but the PS4 uses an install-while-you-play system which, according to early testing, reduces wait times to around 30 seconds.

That's such a massive improvement. The second CPU is clearly going to be put to good use. The one downside to blu-ray is less of a problem now.
what are xbox install times for comparison?
what are xbox install times for comparison?
Probably identical. don't they both use the same blu-ray drives?
Probably identical. don't they both use the same blu-ray drives?
Yes, and you can play games on both consoles while they're installing/downloading. But it would be interesting to see if there's any speed difference.

the ps4 installs the disk as you play
if the xbox one can't play games as you download them then expect 30 minute install times
Man it's been a while since I've had to install games. Gotten so used to Steam just downloaded the finished directory. I mean there are redist installs, but those generally flash by pretty quickly.
hahaha time to get a ps4 now

I saw another Kotaku article which claimed knack to install in 8 seconds
Also, for perspective, to "install" AC4 off of disc on OG PS3, it took 6 minutes; 8 minutes for ACIII.
holy fucking shit.
Do note that you can replace your PS4's HDD with an SSD and increase said speeds.
How are load times so far? I remember that loading up the FEAR 2 demo on my friend's fatty PS3 took forever compared to the 2 seconds it took on my PC. Even on my sister's 360, games load slowly if you haven't played them recently and installing the first GTAV disc took like 20 minutes

I don't think that's going to help install times, considering the bottleneck here is the Blu-ray drive. Even 10 year old mechanical hard drives are about on par with the fastest Blu-ray read speeds.

load times are probably still quite slow. The provided HDD is never faster than 5400 RPM if they are similar to the PS3 drives. The extra RAM might help load times a bit mind.
Not like it really truly matters, since its only like a few seconds for the files it needs to start the game.

Yeah, mainly so it can keep those files in RAM, unlike the current consoles where the optical drive needs to thrash away to be able to constantly load textures and sounds.

it can
He played some Call of Duty: Ghosts. It's a 39-gigabyte installation, Weingarten said. Xbox One will let you play games as they're installing; Weingarten said Ghosts was playable at 51 percent of its installation. It took about 15 minutes to get that far.
keep in mind that this is a multiplat game that is super bloated in size.
also the title is a bit misleading: the 20-40 seconds that the ps4 takes is not the full install, it's the level at which you can play while it's installing.

Eh it seems their "play and install" thing is the source of the improvement
Eh it seems their "play and install" thing is the source of the improvement
Right. That doesn't stop the stupendously low time needed to install a playable amount being a massive improvement though.
i'm gonna be able to play just dance 2014 so fucking fast holy shit

As far as I know the Xbox one can do this as well. My guess is it will most likely be the same around each video game (for singleplayer portions obviously) on each platform.
Still pretty awesome that you don't have to wait for it to install the whole thing (unless of course you somehow beat the first level faster than the second level can be installed..)
what are xbox install times for comparison?
30 minutes with ads and special offers, 15 and no ads if you pay for Xbox Platinum.

you won't have time to stretch and prepare the body before the game becomes ready to play
this is terrible, great job sony you ruined everything

There's always Wii Fit U for all your stretching needs before an intense Just Dance 2014 session!
wait how the fuck am i supposed to be told not to smoke cigarettes 11 times before i play metal gear ground zeroes??? there won't be enough time during the installation screen.
thanks sony for literally making me die of lung cancer.
That's shorter than what most games take to install DirectX redistributables on my system...

I watched the Giant Bomb PS4 unboxing and every game required more than 20GB to install, except Just Dance which required a few hundred MB. What's with the long ass wait time for Just Dance? I want to just dance but here I am waiting.
Ha, does that remind anyone of how Steam used to claim that you could play games while they were downloading? :v:
I didn't know you could read from a disc so fast, or write 45gb to an HDD in less than 40 seconds. Must not be full/complete installs or something, but the bare minimum to get the game running. Even still that's pretty damn fast
