CHERRY HILL, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey motorists have another reason to frown about their driver's license photos.
The state has banned motorists from making big smiles because such expressions don't work with facial recognition software.
The policy has gone mostly unnoticed since taking effect in January.
But Velvet McNeill from Sicklerville is trying to bring it to light.
She tells The Philadelphia Daily News she was so mad about being told not to smile when she went to get her license this week that she stormed out of the Cherry Hill Motor Vehicle Commission office.
After learning the reason for the policy, the 38-year-old says she'll go back and pose with a slight smile.
Who was smiling in New Jersey in the first place?

I thought you weren't supposed to have a facial expression on any identification photo anyway?
I thought you weren't supposed to have a facial expression on any identification photo anyway?
That's how it is in the great state of Indiana. Everyone's IDs look so goddamn depressing.

1. Take photo with you frowing
2. Go everywhere with a huge shit-eating grin
3. Break laws and never be caught!
Whenever I have to take photos for ID or something I'm only allowed to have a neutral expression, I don't know why this wasn't banned in the first place
Why would they smile? They're in a New Jersey DMV

smiling on id photos is banned for like 5 years already here.
It's been like this in Britain for years: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/NeedANewOrUpdatedLicence/DG_078281
I don't see what the big deal would be. Georgia doesn't allow smiling; hell, they wouldn't even let me wear my glasses (Which is funny because I'm required to wear them :v:)
It's because smiling can confuse facial recognition software they use to try and catch fraudsters and shit.
what happened to using eyes for recognition of faces?
I don't really care if it's banned or not, I don't like smiling for my ID picture. Hell I don't even like smiling for pictures, awkward forced smiles are just weird

Just tell suspected fraudsters a good joke while scanning them.
I was told i could smile for my license. I live here in Maryland
You can smile in South Carolina. I didn't because I was in a DMV for half the fucking day because the tester took a three-quarters-of-an-hour break between EVERY test and actually didn't know the traffic laws.
The DMV I go to in Illinois always telling me to smile..
Breakin' tha Law :v
I always smile when my picture is taken....but then everyone says, "Why didn't you smile?"
My smile is never good enough or recognized :smith:
I sure as hell didn't smile.

You can't really suspend people up by the ceiling on a corner or hang them above an intersection 24/7
I didn't smile for my ID, even though they asked me if I was okay with the picture. I wasn't, but I didn't care either, so I have this very mugshot looking driver's license. I also have a very neutral expression.
I would cry tears of joy because my time in the DMV is almost over.
fuck the dmv
By the way, NJ no longer has a "DMV". They renamed it "MVC", "Motor Vehicle Commission".
I don't want anyone deranged enough to be smiling in a DMV behind a wheel anyway.

You've got to take your glasses off in any identification photo. Same thing with passports, licenses, permits for things, etc.
This doesn't come as much of a surprise to me. In both my state ID and driver's license (oklahoma), I had to take off my glasses and told not to smile. Of course, I hate both the pictures because I look like I have jaundice.

Really? When did they change that?

About 2-3 years ago I believe. It's fairly recent, at least.
You're not allowed to smile in your driver's license photo or passport photo in Canada, and they actually yell at you if you do.
Now, no matter if they say I can smile on an ID photo, I don't, and my neutral face looks like I'm about to kill someone.

Huh. Guess I should pay more attention to these things. IIRC you're NJ too right?

Me too. I've had way too many people tell me I look like a mass murderer in mine.
