An Arlington-based video game developer said she and her husband had to temporarily leave their home after they received graphic threats of sexual assault and death on Twitter—a response, she believes, to her online activism on behalf of women in the tech industry Brianna Wu, head of development for the indie video game publisher Giant Spacekat, contacted Arlington police Friday evening after a Twitter account named “Death to Brianna”—whose profile description read, “I’m going to kill Brianna Wu and her husband Frank”—posted a number of graphic death threats.
Source: The Boston Globe
Can we stop with the fucking death threats? What were discussing is GAMES. you know, FUN. Its not actually that important.
Just like those death threats to Anita Sarkeesian that made her go to the police that the police have no record of!
the original threats were not made with the #gamergate tag, therefore there is absolutely nothing that relates this to gamergate. when posted on 8chan it was deleted immediately. there are more ties to somethingawful than gamergate with these threats. boston globe did not bother doing research when they ripped the original article from some other site.
Just like those death threats to Anita Sarkeesian that made her go to the police that the police have no record of!
She may not have gone to the police but their have been death threats.
Can we stop with the fucking death threats? What were discussing is GAMES. you know, FUN. Its not actually that important.
This is what happens when people start taking anything, like games, too seriously.
She may not have gone to the police but their have been death threats.
Then why did she say she went to the police?
Most likely a fat neckbeard or a scrawny 16 year old behind the account but that's beside the point. Anyone who thinks misogyny in the gaming world isn't a problem is being delusional.
Then why did she say she went to the police?
To say she was taking them seriously? I don't know. She shouldn't be receiving death threats, I don't care if she's a cancer in the "gaming" industry. Funny how people are finding it more likely that these people are lying than someone on the internet making actual death threats.
She may not have gone to the police but their have been death threats.
I've gotten legit death threats on twitter and youtube, it really depends on what she constitutes a "death threat"
I don't get why it's so special that they receive death threats. Every game developer does, they're not special.
After Anita faking this shit I have hard time believing this girl either. Also this
There's literally no link with Gamergate whatsoever yet they don't hesitate to smear them in their article. That's some quality journalism right there.
Pretty soon people will be killing eachother for thinking mineral water is better than regular water. Then, there will be splinter groups of de-salinization and well water groups.
here's a news article clemson university faculty receives death threats on the internet for being pro-#gg. goes completely unreported by anyone ever. https://twitter.com/lizzyf620/status/521022706708664320/photo/1
"gamergate" related or not, any death threat has to be taken seriously, doesn't matter if it was literally a dude vowing to kill you from across the street or in twitter. it's still a death threat, this isn't a fucking joke. the fact that some nerds get flustered enough to make threats when people disagree with them over videogames is ridiculous and makes the gaming community look like an even bigger joke than it already is.

Sure there are alot of fucked up little kids who take out their frustration of being ankward little shits that no woman would touch with a pike, on whatever woman they can contact anonymously. But i dont think theres actually any consequential misogynists out there, im pretty sure most people in the medium are just normal, peace-loving folks who try to stay out of trouble.
I don't get why it's so special that they receive death threats. Seriously, do you call the cops everytime someone tells you on the internet that he's gonna kill you?
Funny how pro-GG people like TB/boogie/Johntron and other mainstream supporters dont get any media attention for their death threats, but as soon as one person thats anti-GG gets one its like hell on earth happened. If you really want to know GG as a whole then watch this:
How is this not a problem It's kind of fucked that we're expected to just passively accept shit like this as part of our super special internet culture that must be defended
Well yeah, but what is anyone going to do about it? yeah if you see someone doing it you can call them out, tell them it's dumb and to not be an idiot, that's already happening, but past that it's mostly just an education issue on a global scale. Pretty far out of the scope of gamergate or anything really. Also if we allow these kind of things to be used as valid critacisms against an open thing like gamergate, then it will just encourage even more false flagging. Like, how Brianna Wu was "doxed" and moments later she posted it about it on twitter while everyone on 8chan was telling the doxer to fuck off. And then these sites still pretended this was gamergate as a whole.
the original threats were not made with the #gamergate tag, therefore there is absolutely nothing that relates this to gamergate. when posted on 8chan it was deleted immediately. there are more ties to somethingawful than gamergate with these threats. boston globe did not bother doing research when they ripped the original article from some other site.
She even said herself that it wasn't about gamergate.

I find it stupid that this article is using the death threat news as a way to smear #gamergate. Not saying that the threats are fake or anything since threats should never be cried wolf over.
Spessmehren, you really have a hate-boner for gamergate, don't you?
Doesn't mean we should berate people for actually taking it seriously Sure, we probably can't stop fuck heads from doing it, but we can eliminate our own attitude of responding with "wow just ignore it attention whore"
Yeah thats def the thing not to do. People just get annoyed at it an empty threat being cited as unusual or using it to demonize when for example Milo who leaked the game journo pros list had a needle full of who knows what sent to his house and he didn't even give a shit. Calling the police in response to one of these threats isn't a bad thing to do, because these people might slip up and get caught and that's great, but it's not a sensible response to lose your shit over it especially when your supposed to be a veteran journalist familiar with the exact subject matter. I think the berating in this case at least is mostly due to her using it as a weapon against GG, the response should be to tell her not to take it seriously in the context of comforting rather than berating.
Doesn't mean we should berate people for actually taking it seriously Sure, we probably can't stop fuck heads from doing it, but we can eliminate our own attitude of responding with "wow just ignore it attention whore"
apart from the "attention whore" part that's probably the only advice you could ever give someone Unless you have some interesting ideas on how to end anonymous communication, bunk threats will always be a thing. They will never go away. You can denounce the anonymous people who write them all you want, they will not care. And, as has been pointed out already, tying this to GG is just asinine. As if people in GG don't receive death threats themselves. As if there is anyone in the world with a sizable audience who doesn't receive death threats.
pro-GG people like TB
codemaster, are you seriously gonna group the guy that's probably made the most effort in this situation to speak out against creating sides and good guys VS bad guys rhetoric that distracts from the actual discussion people could be having if they stopped seeing everything in contrasts way too sharp for the nuanced opinions they're supposed to represent? Are you fucking serious
Most likely a fat neckbeard or a scrawny 16 year old behind the account but that's beside the point. Anyone who thinks misogyny in the gaming world isn't a problem is being delusional.
It's funny because actual female game developers that have spoken about it have basically said that no, there isn't any special misogyny in the industry. Surprisingly, all these claims of extreme sexism come in vast majority from indie "devs" and "journalists" who are massive self absorbed cunts, and this #GG business has made them come out of the woodworks to expose themselves as the scum they are (see: Leigh Alexander).
