"There is no way it's going to be a disappointment"
"I think that little Anakin Skywalker, and everyone's gonna say it, stole that movie."
Is this a real person? Is he joking? What's happening right now I'm scared.

Everyone's gonna say it, everyone.
Those poor people, not knowing what awaited for them.
The horror, the terror, the Jar Jar Binks

Might be us on the night of December 18th :(
The resultant film's quality aside, I love looking back at all this Episode 1 news coverage. It showcases what a crazy time the hype for the film was, a bunch of maddening excitement for Star Wars's major return to public consciousness. It's heartwarming in a way, seeing how many had come to care for the saga, albeit bittersweet that the period after that was marred by the repulse from the film's significant flaws. And like the old saying goes, sometimes the journey (in this case the hype and celebration during the wait) is more of a good experience than the destination (the film's release).
Notably, this is only the second piece of news coverage from the release period showing reference to anyone who though the film wasn't good.

If your referring to The Force Awakens, there's like a 0.000001% chance its going to suck.

People were thinking that back in 1999, too. I personally have a reasonable amount of trust in everything, but let us not forget that Abrams isn't a perfect director. Cloverfield, Super 8, the new Star Trek and others have their fair share of critics.
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace is the most disappointing thing since my son. I mean, how much more could you possibly fuck up the entire back story of Star Wars? While my son eventually hanged himself in the bathroom of the gas station, the unfortunate reality is that the Star Wars prequels is that they'll be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.
Anyone remember that one scene from a growing up montage in Ted where Mark Wahlberg and Ted were waiting in line for The Phantom Menace? People were HYPED to see this movie, and to this day, I think some people still bought the hype. My parents are still amazed to this day on how much the prequels brought back the love into the Star Wars franchise. The games are also a good example.
I am pretty sure Abrams has had quite a look at the Prequels and seen what went wrong. Hopefully, he has even seen the Red Letter Media reviews, which basically covers everything wrong about the prequels. I really, really hope Abrams does modern Star Wars some real, and deserved, justice.

Well at least most people liked it. I watched Star Wars episode I about 10 days ago. I was prepared with the knowledge that episode I is considered to be the worst Star Wars movie because Jar Jar is in it. Nevertheless I quite liked the film. It contains important info on where Anakin comes from, how he grows and how he stood in the Star Wars universe at young age.
I loved the film. I mostly glanced over the shortcomings because I was too focussed on the political/war aspect of the whole ordeal.
Star wars comes out on my birthday this year so it better not be fucking shit
With full knowledge on prequels and how they sucked (my own experience enchanced with Plinkett's reviews) I have opened myself to the spoilers. They are as legit as you can get without someone actually owning the movie itself, confirmed through every little piece of official TFA content we got.
And, well, it looks like a good Star Wars movie, unless you expected some Grand Celebration of Star Wars with the old cast. So, yeah, it won't be a repeat of the prequels, probably.
I feel bad for these people being documented as thinking it was okay. I mean, everyone walking out of the theater thought it was okay before coming to terms with the fact that it was complete and utter shit, but to be recorded saying you loved it? Must feel terrible.
It was a simpler, less cynical time.
I actually felt like the maul lightsaber duel was better than the duels in 2 and 3, the hits seemed more like hits and less like lightsaber dancing

I seriously cannot believe that they somehow made the yoda puppet in the phantom menace look so shit. the one in empire strikes back was great looking.

I believe they were trying to make him look younger in the way they designed the Episode 1 puppet. Clearly though, they only succeeded in making him look more ugly than one would prefer.

Looking back on both this film and all the buildup to it, it seems to me that what really killed Ep1 was the hype culture. Now it's definitely not as good as the original trilogy, but it wouldn't have been worth as much backlash as it was if it weren't so hyped up. This is why I'm trying to not get excited for Ep7, it's far less capable of being a letdown when you don't expect it to atone for all your sins and feed you pancakes.

Episode I isn't that bad of a film by itself, but it's a pretty weak prequel because much of what happens in the film just isn't relevant to the rest of the series.

That could be said of the entire Prequel trilogy, really. The whole thing is really kind of concerned with itself, y'know what I mean? In terms of telling the backstories of Anakin and the Emperor and Obi-Wan, all that shit is major on the backburner. Sure, you get to see the planet Anakin came from and all, and you vaguely sort of kind of see Obi-Wan's training of him and all that, but little of anything that happens has anything to fucking do with the Original Trilogy at all. Darth Maul who is pretty much THE antagonist of the first movie, has almost no character aside from his outward appearance (I don't even remember him having a single line of dialogue), he doesn't really do anything except be there for lightsaber fights. The Trade Federation, their goal is ???, and despite being the overarching bad guys for the entire prequel trilogy, they barely do anything that relates back to the whole fucking concept of the Empire and the main characters at all, in favor of focusing entirely on the clone war, something Obi-Wan only mentioned in pretty much a throw-away line in A New Hope.
Basically what I'm saying is that if you changed around the character's names you could honestly just call it an original story separate from the original trilogy, hell, you could honestly set the Prequel trilogy at any point in time in that case. The fact that you could easily slot the Prequels in to being a new story JUST by changing the names and almost nothing else, and you could move them 4000 years back and it wouldn't matter or change anything, is not a good sign at all.
And, yes, to break the rule and bring up the expanded universe, back when I was a much nerdier little fuck I read some Star Wars books. Some of these books, set in the prequel era, covered Anakin and Obi-Wan's various missions. One covered their undercover adventures on some planet, another covered their incidental adventure when Obi Wan was training Anakin, and both of those from what I remember felt like they covered the relationship between Anakin and Obi Wan way more in depth than the prequels. I'm nerding the fuck out of myself at this point, and I know it's a book, but if they were going to do a prequel then doing one of these stories as one of the movies would have been a way better fuckin' idea. Instead of putting the developing relationship of Obi Wan and Anakin as very much a side thing to the primary focus of the stupid ass dumb ass clone war, focus on Obi Wan and Anakin getting to know each other, going on an adventure, him training him and so on, in the middle of one of these adventures that in the prequels we got are only passingly fuckin' referred to and never shown. Let us see their relationship form and grow, don't just tell us that it exists. If you did that, that would relate much more to the original trilogy and give much more weight to the relationship between the two characters on screen. Focus on the formation of the Empire and shit like that. A direct focus on things expanding on the originals while also being their own enjoyable experiences INSTEAD of this weird story that has nothing to do with anything and are part of the whole reason why the two trilogies are in as separate camps as they are in the first place.

It's pretty unlikely, I mean JJ Abrams for me at the very least has had a pretty good track record in making good quality movies. Anyway, I think that with Lucas out of the picture many of the problems faced with the prequels can easily be avoided.

As a Star Trek fan I hate how Abrahms used Into Darkness as nothing more than his audition for Star Wars

As a Star Wars fan, I think that's hilarious
Into Darkness was pretty painful to watch in the story department. I hope to god he doesn't use that script writer.

He isn't. He's using himself and the script writer of Episode 5 and 6.

They were even re-writing on set as they got a feel of the film and the actors.
